Weekend Event Planner
These are the 6 best things to do in Fort Worth this weekend
With it being the weekend directly after Christmas, there are naturally fewer new events taking place. But you can still partake in the variety of holiday happenings still going on, as well as the final days of a classic holiday ballet, an Oscar-caliber movie, a trio of country music concerts (one tinged with comedy), and the closing of notable art exhibit.
Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. Want more options? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.
Thursday, December 26
Texas Ballet Theater presents The Nutcracker
This is the final weekend to experience the most magical Christmas tradition of the season as Clara and her Nutcracker Prince battle an army of mice and travel through a winter wonderland to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Kingdom of Sweets. Exquisite costumes and dazzling choreography will transport audiences to a world where dreams do come true. The production runs through Sunday at Bass Performance Hall.
Friday, December 27
Magnolia at the Modern: Waves
Set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida and featuring an astonishing ensemble of award-winning actors and breakouts alike, Waves traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family, led by a well-intentioned but domineering father, as they navigate love, forgiveness and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. The film will screen seven times through Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Read our review here.
Josh Weathers in concert
Josh Weathers is a rock-n-soul infused, singer/songwriter powerhouse based out of Fort Worth. He has released three albums in his career, including 2019's Wild Ones. He can be seen playing all over Texas, but he'll come back to Fort Worth to play one of his final shows of 2019 at Billy Bob's Texas.
Saturday, December 28
Aaron Watson in concert
Country singer Aaron Watson is 42 years old and has been recording music for 20 years, but it wasn't until 2012 that he hit it big with his 11th album, appropriately titled The Underdog, which went to No. 1 on the country charts. He's been near the top of the charts ever since, including with his 2019 album, Red Bandana. He'll play at Billy Bob's Texas.
Sunday, December 29
Amon Carter Museum of American Art presents "Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940-1950" closing day
Sunday will be the final day to view "Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940-1950," the first exhibition chronicling the formative beginnings of Parks’ extensive career. The exhibition highlights Parks’ mastery of the camera to create an uplifting vision of African-American life at the mid-20th century. Parks is a pioneering African-American photographer who considered his work of the 1940s and ’50s to be the catalyst for a deeply influential 60-year career that stretched from photography to writing and filmmaking.
Rodney Carrington in concert
There are many entertainers who try their hand at multiple disciplines, but Rodney Carrington might be the only country music singer/stand-up comedian working today. Much of his material, which includes six albums dating back to 1998, is of the, shall we say, dirtier variety, making him an acquired taste. He'll perform at Billy Bob's Texas.
