Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo dominates best weekend events
Mid-January brings a nice hodgepodge of events to the Fort Worth area. Among the new things starting this weekend are a national tour of a hit Broadway show, a driving experience like no other, and the return of the biggest local event this side of the State Fair of Texas.
Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.
Thursday, January 14
Performing Arts Fort Worth presents Motown the Musical
No matter what your favorite classic Motown song may be, chances are it'll be sung during Motown the Musical, which brings its national tour to Bass Performance Hall through Sunday. The production follows Motown founder Berry Gordy as he builds the classic record label, working with legends Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and many more.
AEG Live presents The Colleen & Josh Show
Certain YouTube personalities are as big or bigger than television or movie stars for those in the Millennial generation, and fans will get a double dose at this event. Married couple Colleen Ballinger and Joshua David Evans have made their individual marks on the Internet, both essentially dealing in musical comedy. They'll present a live version of their repertoire at Casa Mañana Theatre.
Friday, January 15
Fittipaldi Exotic Driving
Most of us could never dream of even sitting in a Ferrari or Lamborghini, much less owning one. Now, thanks to the new Fittipaldi Exotic Driving at Texas Motor Speedway, you can actually drive one on a race track — for a price. Taking place one weekend a month for the rest of 2016, drivers will have the opportunity to choose one of four luxury cars in which to take six laps around TMS' infield track.
2016 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
The annual Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is a three-week-long event that's on par with the State Fair of Texas. The main events are the daily rodeos at Will Rogers Coliseum, but there are also shows with multiple other animals, livestock auctions, a parade through downtown Fort Worth on January 16, special events at nearby museums, a midway with carnival games and fair food, and multiple concerts from local and regional country music acts. The Stock Show will go on through February 6.
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Kholodenko and Friends
It's always a special occasion when Vadym Kholodenko, winner of the gold medal at the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013, comes back to town to perform. Kholodenko and a few musicians from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will put on a concert at the Kimbell Art Museum, performing two pieces by Janácek and one by Dvorák.
Saturday, January 16
National Theatre Live presents Coriolanus
If you only know actor Tom Hiddleston from his role as Loki in the Thor film series and The Avengers, you're selling yourself short. In 2014, he played the lead role in a London production of William Shakespeare's Coriolanus, a performance you can still see thanks to National Theatre Live and Amphibian Stage Productions, which will present a screening at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
