While many events in and around Fort Worth have either been postponed or canceled during the coronavirus pandemic, organizations have pivoted to virtual or socially-distanced events to continue offering the masses some entertainment while we need it the most.
Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. While not every event is out of the house, they all promise to provide a nice distraction from the everyday life.
Friday, March 5
Magnolia at the Modern: Minari
A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home. The film, which is in English and Korean with English subtitles, will screen five times this weekend and five times March 12-14 at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
Fort Worth Museum of Science and History presents Earth Optimism Drive-In Theater Event
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed physical and social environments. What can we learn from these changes, and how can we adapt? Five local teens identified a world issue and a plan to help. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History will present a free drive-in theater showcasing the two-minute videos that the teens have created for the national Earth Optimism competition. Viewers can learn ways they can build a more sustainable future. The screening will take place in the museum's north parking lot.
Fort Worth Opera presents A Night of Black Excellence: Past, Present, and Future
Two weeks after the live event, the Fort Worth Opera will present encore showings of A Night of Black Excellence: Past, Present, and Future, an all-star virtual benefit concert to celebrate Black History Month. Hosted by WFAA Channel 8’s Daybreak anchor Tashara Parker, the event pays tribute to Black brilliance through music, dance, and spoken word poetry, with performances by some of the greatest Black opera singers and artists of our generation.
Shane Smith & The Saints in concert
The Austin-based Shane Smith & The Saints is a band that's on the rise, having released their first three albums in the past eight years. They've become a mainstay on the Texas circuit, playing at a wide variety of local venue and festivals. They'll come back to play at Billy Bob's Texas in support of their latest album, 2019's Hail Mary.
Saturday, March 6
RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo
While The American Rodeo Semi-Finals will go on at Cowtown Coliseum through Friday, the main event will take place at AT&T Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The American is the richest weekend in Western sports, featuring the Top 10 rodeo athletes in the world competing against everyday cowboys and cowgirls for the biggest two-day payout in rodeo.
Charley Crockett in concert
While many musicians who come out of Texas go the country route, Charley Crockett has made his own path in the blues genre. He's also as relentless a music producer as anybody out there, as he's released an album every year since 2015, including the recently released 10 for Slim: Charley Crockett Sings James Hand. He'll play at Billy Bob's Texas.
Minari will play at the Modern Art Museum, March 5-7 and March 12-14.
