Art and music are on the docket in and around Fort Worth this weekend. You'll have to go off the beaten path for the art, and enjoying the best music events might require a trek to Dallas, but we promise that all of them will be worth the trip.

Thursday, August 4
New exhibits at Fort Works Art
Located just a hop, skip, and a jump down Montgomery Street from the Museum District, Fort Works Art opens two new exhibits this weekend. The first, Dan Lam: Coquette, is Lam’s first solo exhibition, which features large-scale installation works and multiple “drippy” sculptures for which she has become known. The second, 9 Grams, is an international group exhibition of contemporary works comprising artists whose works are connected via their strong use of color and abstract nature. There is an opening reception on Friday evening at 6, and both shows run through September 17.
Rockin' the River: Midnight River Choir with Troy Cartwright
The summer-long Rockin' the River series is almost at an end; in fact, this is the penultimate concert before next weekend's two-part season finale. This concert at Panther Island Pavilion features a headline performance by Midnight River Choir on the Coors Light Stage, accompanied by Troy Cartwright on the Southside Stage, along with, of course, the nightly fireworks.
Friday, August 5
Texas Art Expo 2016
Now in its 13th year, the Texas Art Expo includes a dozen or more dealers displaying oil and watercolor paintings, prints, drawings, and other works by Texas artists, including several self-representing artists displaying their earlier work. The show takes place at Fort Worth Community Arts Center through Saturday.
First Fridays at the Modern
The first Friday of every month, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth throws open its doors for special tours, performances, and cocktails. This Friday features a performance by up-and-coming Fort Worth singer Taylor Craig Mills, an inside look at the Modern's current exhibit, Frank Stella: A Retrospective, and a cocktail appropriately called Summer Sizzler.
Magnolia at the Modern presents Les Cowboys
Also at the Modern is its continuing series Magnolia at the Modern. This weekend's film is Les Cowboys, a French Western in which a father sets out with his son to find his missing daughter. The film screens six times through Sunday.
Dixie Chicks in concert with Vintage Trouble and Smooth Hound Smith
It's been 10 years since the Dixie Chicks were last heard from in any meaningful way, as the three band members — Natalie Maines, Emily Robison, and Marty Maguire — decided to focus on their families and side projects. It's unclear if this tour, which stops at Gexa Energy Pavilion, is a type of comeback or one final fling with their fans, but we'll take it either way.
Culture Club in concert
Speaking of bands who haven't been heard from in a while, Boy George and Culture Club released their last album 17 years ago. But everything old is new again, and the band has put aside any differences for a worldwide tour in support of their forthcoming new album, Tribes. Fans can hear their new and classic songs at Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie.
Saturday, August 6
4th Annual Heroes for Hope 5K Run/Walk
The event starts with a free kids 1K fun run (12 and under) followed by the 5K run/walk. All levels are encouraged to participate; if you can run, walk, or crawl, this is your race. After the race there will be free craft beer, root beer, free BBQ and other food, free fresh fruit, free massages, a superhero costume for kids and adults, contest for largest team and largest corporate team, ice cold towels at the water stops, a kids fun zone, and a vendor village.
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents Anime at the Modern
Anime fans will want to park themselves at the Modern for the next three Saturdays, as the museum presents six significant Japanese animated films. The series starts off with The Boy and the Beast, the latest feature film from award-winning Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, director Mamoru Hosoda's warmhearted fantasy.
