Few embody the concept of "cowboys and culture" like Donna Kyle Veale. The real estate agent is the wife of a sixth-generation rancher and descendent of J.J. Ward of West Texas.

She moved from Telluride, Colorado, (where she is still a broker) to live with her husband in Fort Worth and enjoys representing luxury buyers and sellers in North Texas.

"Rivercrest is a great neighborhood for families, and especially golfers!" she says. "People greet you with a smile and live an active lifestyle. With easy access to downtown and the Trinity Trails, this area is a great location for young couples, families, and those interested in immersing themselves in Fort Worth."

Where to eat & drink
Donna Kyle's absolute favorite place to dine is Paris 7th, where the classic French cuisine reminds her of the year she lived in France. "My favorite small plate is the foie gras de canard au torchon," she says.

Roy Pope Grocery is her favorite place to grab a quick bite with friends, thanks to its comfortable, trendy atmosphere. "It has a fabulous gourmet deli, serving specialty coffees, wine, and beer," Donna Kyle says. "I can always count on fresh fruit from the produce section or a select Angus steak for the grill. The staff is especially friendly and always so helpful."

Where to play
River Crest Country Club offers much more than just a round of golf. "I always feel pampered by the staff, whether I’m hosting a special event or enjoying refreshments from the 1911 Lounge," she says. "Tuesday night is fried chicken night, and it is well attended by Rivercrest families."

What to see
Just a short distance from Rivercrest are the Cultural District museums. "I love visiting the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame," Donna Kyle says. "During the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, it’s a must on my list of places to take our out-of-town guests."

Her favorite specialty shop is PS The Letter, which is where she goes whenever she needs a unique gift. "I especially love sending handwritten notes, and PS The Letter has the most lovely collection of custom stationery," she says. "Their bespoke crystal gifts and custom decor never disappoint."

Where to live
"The historic elegance of the estates in Rivercrest captured my interest when I first moved to Fort Worth," Donna Kyle says. "The homes are diverse in terms of architecture, with styles ranging from Mediterranean to modern. Many of these homes date back to 1910, when Fort Worth was considered the Old West and populated by cattlemen, ranchers, and oil tycoons."

The grandest historic homes are the few that sit along the bluff on Crestline Road. Donna Kyle's personal favorite home in the Rivercrest area is the Baldridge House, a Georgian mansion built in 1910 that has been beautifully preserved and updated. It was designated as a Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission in 1978.

"Its gardens are as opulent as the chandeliers that drape the ceilings throughout the home," says Donna Kyle. "The home rivals many of this era — it is sincerely captivating!"

Some Rivercrest homes are tucked away for privacy yet have expansive golf course views. The floor plans are fitting for growing families, with three-plus bedrooms and ensuite baths — and expect to see large kitchens and dining areas separate from the living areas.

Overton Park: Great schools make this family-friendly neighborhood shine

When Margaret Motheral says her neighborhood feels like family, she's not kidding. The real estate agent has lived in Overton Park for the past 34 years, raising her family surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who also chose to put down roots in this special community.

"Now my adult children have chosen to live in the neighborhood, too," she says. "We have so many friends and family who live in the area. The schools here are highly ranked, and it’s centrally located. We knew our investment would be safe here!"

Indeed, Overton Park has a new state-of-the-art elementary school — Overton Park Elementary School — that runs pre-K through fifth grade. The neighborhood is also close to several great private schools, as well as I-20 and I-30 for commuting.

Motheral lists Yogi's Deli & Grill, Cafe Bella, and Tavern as tried-and-true favorites.

Where to play
"Take a bike ride on the Trinity Trails or walk through Overton Park," says Motheral. "Your children will love playing on the playground or even having a birthday party at the park."

The Shops at Clearfork is a must for shopping and dining, and Motheral points out that it's a great place to bowl or see a movie, too.

Where to live
Overton Park consists of one-story ranch-style homes, midcentury modern homes, and two-story Colonial-style homes. Homes are sited on spacious lots that range from a third of an acre to a half-acre or more.

"The winding, tree-lined streets make for a beautiful landscape," Motheral says. "Pride of ownership is evident as you drive through the neighborhood."

"Having moved from California, it was great to have a real estate agent with such experience in the Fort Worth market," says Dave, one of Motheral's clients. "We were able to weigh the pluses and minuses of each area and came out with a great deal in a wonderful neighborhood."

Nine years ago, Barbara Schweitzer and her husband, Thurman — both real estate agents — moved to Riverhills, drawn to the idea of building their dream home in a new community.

"We love the central location, the parks, and the shopping and dining in the area," Schweitzer says.

Where to play
Schweitzer advises visiting The Trailhead at Clearfork and walking along the Trinity River, and saying "hi" to the cows lounging on nearby ranch land. It's also relaxing to play in one of the many neighborhood parks.

For a day or night of entertainment, you can't go wrong shopping and browsing the artwork at The Shops at Clearfork, or taking in a movie at the onsite AMC theater. Bowling and bocce ball at Pinstripes is also a can't-fail outing.

Where to live
Riverhills is full of various architectural styles, from French to Colonial, Texas to Tudor, and Mediterranean to Craftsman.

A recent sale of The Schweitzer Group's is 5128 Peach Willow Ln., a five-bedroom French-style home in phase two of Riverhills.

"There is such a strong sense of community here: Kids play in the park together, neighbors entertain on their front porch, and the changes in season are celebrated with gift exchanges, egg hunts, and popsicles in the park," says Schweitzer.

Imagine strolling along tree-lined streets, waving to other families who are out with their strollers and dogs, yet still being close to Fort Worth's cultural offerings.

"This is such a vibrant community," says real estate agent Ashley Mooring, who has been working in the Monticello neighborhood for more than a decade.

A native Texan with a BBA from the University of Texas, Mooring cheers for both the Longhorns and her home team, the TCU Horned Frogs.

She is actively involved in her son’s school, Fort Worth Country Day, and supports many local organizations and philanthropies.

Mooring offered up a few of her personal favorites about life in Monticello. Here's her guide to the area:

Where to eat & drink
Though Mooring loves to cook at home, she'll never turn down a meal at Michaels Cuisine (the tortilla soup is addictive, she says), the No. 12 Outdoorsman sandwich at The Great Outdoors, the El Capitan tacos at Salsa Limon, or kolaches and a "dynamite" burger from Pearl Snap Kolaches.

Head to Winslow's Wine Cafe for its patio or the bar at Eddie V's, where Mooring enjoys the live music while dining on the "wonderful steak and seafood — the crab fried rice is a must!"

Where to play
You'll always bump into someone you know at River Crest Country Club or the Westside Little League baseball field, which Mooring says is a happening spot.

The Monticello neighborhood park is also a great place for playdates and gatherings, and as an added bonus, "some of the area private schools have buses that pick up the neighborhood kids at the park for school," says Mooring.

What to see
Fort Worth is the epicenter of cowboy culture as well as fine arts, which is very apparent in the city's Cultural District. Pop into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

"All the museums have great gift shops," Mooring says, "and members often get invited to exclusive parties. The Kimbell hosts especially great workshops for kids."

"Dickies Arena is the place to be!" Mooring says. "The venue hosts the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, awesome concerts from a variety of music genres — Chris Stapleton, Parker McCollum, The Eagles, etc. — and a number of sports events like NCAA basketball tournaments, tennis, lacrosse, and more. The Avion Club at Dickies makes for a special evening before any event."

Where to live
"A lot of the traditional-style homes from the 1940s have been beautifully remodeled and added on to," says Mooring, "but there's also some new construction happening, with precautions being taken to preserve the traditional appeal of the neighborhood."

Some of the most popular architecture styles you'll see in Monticello include brick Tudor, traditional two-story, foursquare, Spanish Revival, and Colonial. But above all, residents can expect to enjoy lots of beautiful trees and peaceful, winding roads.

"The upcoming Crescent development on 7th Street will bring a hotel, shops, luxury residential units, and excitement to the area," says Mooring.

Walnut Creek: Individuality defines this sought-after Mansfield neighborhood

Though Theresa Kell doesn't technically live in Walnut Creek, she's certainly an honorary resident. Whether visiting friends in the neighborhood or using the amenities at Walnut Creek Country Club, where she's a member, the Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty agent is an area regular.

She likes the neighborhood so much that she began specializing in it five years ago. "It is in the heart of Mansfield and I love the people in that community," Kell says. "The homes are all so unique and different — I love that it is not cookie-cutter."

If you're looking to have a drink and unwind, head to Poured. "The best sushi is Suzushii, and my favorite spot for brunch or breakfast is 360 Brunch House," she says.

Where to play
"Mansfield has more than 900 acres of parkland, and my favorite is Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park," says Kell. "It is by far my favorite neighborhood gem."

Also on her outdoors list are Katherine Rose Memorial Park, Joe Pool Lake, Britton Park, and McClendon Park West, with Hawaiian Falls, StarCenter Mansfield, and popping into the boutiques in historic downtown Mansfield also making the cut for play time.

What to see
Get a glimpse into the life of Mansfield residents in the mid-19th century at the Man House Museum, the homestead of Mansfield founder Ralph Man, and learn even more at the Mansfield Historical Museum & Heritage Center. Take in a movie under the stars or an al fresco concert at The Lot Downtown.

Where to live
"Homes in this area were built anywhere from the early 1980s to the early 2000s, and price points range from the high $300,000s to $1,000,000 or more," Kell says. "Many of the homes back up to the award-winning Walnut Creek Country Club golf course. This area is highly sought-out and homes do not last long."

The homes here are surrounded by parks and walking trails and are minutes away from retail and restaurants. The Walnut Creek area is centrally located, only 30 minutes away from DFW International Airport and the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth.

'Yellowstone' stars to greet fans at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

Yellowstone fans, get your comfy shoes ready - there'll be a long line for this one. Cole Hauser a.k.a. "Rip Wheeler" on Yellowstone, and Taylor Sheridan, the show's co-creator, executive producer, and director of the series, will meet fans and sign autographs at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

The event will take place from 4:30-6:30 pm only on Friday, February 3. Location is the 6666 Ranch booth near the south end of Aisle 700 in the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Exhibits Hall.

According to a February 2 announcement from FWSSR, "fans will have the opportunity to snag an autograph as well as purchase some distinctive Yellowstone and 6666 Ranch merchandise while also enjoying all the features the Stock Show offers."

The event is free to attend (with paid Stock Show admission) and open to the public.

It's the second year in a row for Hauser to appear at FWSSR; in 2022, he and fellow cast mates drew huge crowds.

Sheridan, a Paschal High School graduate, is no stranger to Fort Worth; he lives in a ranch near Weatherford and filmed 1883, the prequel to Yellowstone, in and around Fort Worth. Currently, another spinoff, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, is filming in North Texas.

The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is winding up its 2023 run on Saturday, February 4.

Fort Worth Oktoberfest
Fort Worth Oktoberfest is a three-day celebration of German culture with the best in Bavarian entertainment. Guests can drink das bier, eat das sausage, and polka till they drop. This year’s lineup includes Alex Meixner Band, Das Ist Lustig, Alpenmusikanten, Walburg Boys and the Happy Hour Oktoberfestband. There will also be a midway with carnival rides and games. The festival takes place through Saturday at Trinity Park.

Haunted houses/Halloween events
Halloween is over a month a way, but you can get in the spirit now by going to one of a couple of haunted houses/Halloween events now open near Fort Worth. They include Pumpkin Nights at Howell Farms in Arlington, featuring over 5,000 hand-carved real and artificial pumpkins; and Fright Fest at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, featuring seven different haunted houses, a variety of scare zones with zombies, witches, and more, and chilling rides in the dark. Both are open through at least October 30, with more haunts opening next week.

Authentic Flamenco presents Amador Rojas
Teatro Real - The Royal Opera of Madrid and Fever have teamed up to present Authentic Flamenco, a traditional flamenco dance show. The live presentation features award-winning Spanish artists Amador Rojas and Ángeles Gabaldón as dancers, Paco Iglesias on guitar, Diego Amador and Tomasa Peña as singers, and Luis Amador on percussion. There will be two performances on Thursday at Downtown Cowtown at the Isis.

Fort Worth Dance Festival
The mission of Fort Worth Dance Festival is to preserve and promote dance in the city of Fort Worth. The festival will gather various area dance institutions, ranging from dance professionals, artists, choreographers, students, teachers, studio owners, artistic directors, dance clothing stores, and others to share ideas, experiences, technique, and artistic voices. The festival takes place through Saturday at I.M. Terrell Academy.

The Cliburn presents Anna Geniushene
Anna Geniushene’s fresh, layered, and powerful interpretations defined her participation at the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition - and won her the coveted silver medal and the adoration of fans around the globe. Her inaugural season as a Cliburn winner included recital appearances in the United States, Japan, China, and Lithuania. She'll perform on both Thursday and Friday at Kimbell Art Museum.

Casa Mañana presents Vintage Pop!: From The 1920s to the 1980s with Carole J. Bufford
Vintage Pop travels by decade, from the 1920s to the 1980s, exploring how the style and sound of pop music developed over the years. The show will highlight Carole J. Bufford's inimitable style, stories behind the music, and songs by Judy Garland, Sophie Tucker, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sting, Tina Turner, Prince, and more. The show will play in the Reid Cabaret Theatre at Casa Mañana through September 30.

Beyoncé in concert
It's taken a long time, but R&B/pop superstar Beyoncé has finally arrived in Arlington in one of the last stops on her Renaissance World Tour. The tour, which is in support of her 2022 album, Renaissance, has been met with rapturous reviews at every stop, featuring a variety of big special guests and the production value that only Queen Bey can deliver. If you're lucky enough to have a ticket, you can see her perform at AT&T Stadium.

Southall in concert
Southall - formerly The Read Southall Band - formed out of the local songwriting scene in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 2015 following the success of Read Southall's debut solo album, Six String Sorrow. The country band has released three albums in their short career, most recently 2021's For the Birds. They'll play at Billy Bob's Texas.

Fort Worth Museum of Science and History presents "Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit"
The new exhibition "Very Eric Carle" highlights a journey into the imaginative world of the renowned author and illustrator. Inspired by his quintet of "very" books, including the beloved classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the play-and-learn exhibition is all about friendship, creativity, and the power of imagination. Visitors can step into a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and shapes, where the boundaries between art and nature blur. The exhibition will be on display at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History through January 7, 2024.

NASCAR Weekend at Texas Motor Speedway
With the NASCAR season in its final stretch, Texas Motor Speedway will play host to two major races with playoff implications. On Saturday will be the Andy's Frozen Custard 300, which kicks off the Xfinity Series Playoffs. That will be followed on Sunday by the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400, in which the top 12 drivers left in the Cup Series compete on the 1.5 mile speedway, including point leaders William Byron and Martin Truex Jr.

Saturday, September 23

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents FLY Dance Company: Breakin’ Classical
FLY is what happens when street dance and classical music meet, but that’s not all. Based in Houston, FLY is pure fun - youthful energy, risk-taking movement, and clever choreography set to a mix of surprising musical selections. FLY has been spreading their infectious “theatrical hip hop” around the world since 1992. They'll perform with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at Will Rogers Auditorium.

Daughtry in concert
For a fourth-place finisher on American Idol, Chris Daughtry sure has made the most of his opportunity. He's one of only a handful of contestants to become an unqualified success after the show, as he and his band have racked up multiple No. 1 songs and albums. With six albums in their career, most recently 2021's Dearly Beloved, they'll play at Arlington Music Hall.

Sunday, September 24

BoDeans in concert
Rock band BoDeans is entering its fifth decade, having formed in Wisconsin in 1983. Although they've released 14 albums throughout the career, most recently 2022's 4 The Last Time, they're best known for their 1993 song, "Closer to Free," which served as the theme song to the TV family drama series, Party of Five. They'll play at Tannahill's Tavern & Music Hall.

Christian Nodal in concert
It's still early in Mexican singer Christian Nodal's career, but he's already set an enviable pace. Each of his three albums, most recently 2020's Ayayay!, have gone to No. 1 on Billboard's Regional Mexican Albums charts, as well as the top 10 Billboard Latin charts. And pretty much every single he puts out, including two off his new EP, Forajido 2, make the top 10 on the Mexican charts. He'll play at Dickies Arena.

9 DFW companies clock in among Forbes' best employers in Texas for 2023

Dallas-Fort Worth continues to prove it's home to some of the best businesses in the state. Two local employers in fact - Texas Oncology and Fidelity Investments - have moved into highly coveted top-10 spots on Forbes' 2023 list of "America’s Best Employers By State".

The prestigious list is a collaboration between Forbes and Statista to survey the satisfaction levels of tens of thousands of workers employed by national companies.

Dallas-based Texas Oncology - the largest cancer treatment and research providers in the state - earned a rank of No. 6. Forbes says there are more than 4,700 workers employed by the oncology network.

On its career website, nurse leader Nicole Forkner, BSN, RN, OCN said Texas Oncology has been her "home away from home" for nearly two decades.

"So many of our patients have left a lasting memory with me. Not only are we healing their heart, mind, and soul, but they are healing ours too," Forkner said. "The guidance we have received from our amazing Texas Oncology leadership team has led us through hurricanes, ice storms, new initiatives, software changes, and the COVID-19 pandemic."

Fidelity Investments made major gains in 2023. Though the company might be based in Boston, Massachusetts, its big presence in Westlake (coupled with a great work environment and advancement opportunities) propels it to the top year after year. The financial services corporation climbed to No. 9 in Texas this year, after ranking No. 22 in Forbes' 2022 list. There are about 61,000 people employed by Fidelity, according to the report.

Forbes explains that those on the list "aren’t the best large or midsize employers nationally, but a deeper look at which companies are closer-to-home options for every American worker."

Forbes and Statista determined their rankings by surveying 70,000 Americans working at employers in the U.S. with at least 500 employees each. The final list features 1,392 highly recommended employers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 270 employers ranked highly in multiple states.
