Dig into the history and food of Temple, where town meets country

On the Road

Located smack-dab in between Waco and Austin, Temple brings together town and country. It features a historic downtown district with shopping, art, and entertainment, plus easy access to lakes, hiking, and parks.

But the town’s growing scene also boasts an impressive — and eclectic — mix of locally owned and operated dining destinations, where you can just as easily sidle up for some seriously good gourmet pizza with a side of live music as you can for a dressed-up dinner for two, or even a Mexican-Korean mash-up of flavors.

Go for the food and bevvies, stay for the vibe
Treno Pizzeria & Taproom serves up all the artisan, wood-fired pies you could want (try the Lord of the Rings with calamari, or the King Brisket) and the craft beers to go with them. They also have live music on their lawn space outside and a kids’ movie night each week.

Veteran-owned Fire Base Brewing Company offers a large selection of craft beers in a dynamic atmosphere with events and specials throughout the week, including open mic nights, food trucks, and live music.

Casual-cool hangout The Yard – Food Truck Plaza has a rotating list of mobile eateries throughout the year, along with local artists and music.

Find global flavors in the heart of Temple
Drawing inspiration from the owners' cultures and experiences, MexiKo Cafe pairs Mexican and Korean cuisines to create a unique assortment of dishes you didn't know you needed until now.

For authentic, straight-up Mexican cuisine, head to Tres Magueyes for everything from chile rellenos to carne asada, fajitas, enchiladas, and more.

La Dalat Vietnamese Cuisine is a traditional Vietnamese restaurant with fresh, authentic dishes such as phở, bánh mì, caramelized clay-pot catfish, and more.

Visit Ireland by way of O'Brien's Irish Pub. Yes, there are cheese curds and bangers and mash on the menu in addition to lots of beers on tap. The pub is housed in a 100-year-old building, which only adds to the charm.

If your tastebuds are primed for spice of another kind, look no further than Thai Cafe with its classic dishes and seafood specialties.

With a claim to fame as one of the only fine-dining Jamaican restaurants in Central Texas, Ras Kitchen takes its Caribbean-style cuisine seriously. From jerk chicken to brown-stew and curry, it’s all on the menu and made to order by Chef Ras.

For a hibachi experience, head to Nami Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar to enjoy authentic cuisine in a fun, unique environment.

In between meals, find more to love
Only about 500 steps from The Yard - Food Truck Plaza, the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum is a fascinating place to learn about what it was like to work and travel on the railroad, and it's housed in the historic Santa Fe Depot that dates to 1911.

Right in front of the museum is Santa Fe Plaza, a beautiful and expansive green space with an amphitheater and stage, fountains, and gazebo.

While downtown, you'll want to pop into the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The niche museum is behind a charming, mosaic-tiled 1931 storefront and brings Czech history and culture to life, with a special focus on the story of Czech immigrants in Texas from 1850 to the early 1900s.

For the littles, the Temple Children's Museum is an interactive place for learning and fun, with exhibits designed for children up to 8 years old. Plus, they host periodic summer camps.

Texas' Whataburger finally jumps on the spicy chicken sandwich trend

Fried Chicken News

After two years of Reddit threads and pleas on social media, Whataburger is finally giving the people what they want: a spicy chicken sandwich.

The San Antonio-based fast-food chain's "meticulously marinated" Spicy Chicken Sandwich is available now at all locations.

Whataburger's newest offering is a marinated chicken filet, fried crisp, and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayo on a toasted bun. It's available for purchase either in-store or for curbside and delivery through the Whataburger app, which debuted in May.

Last year, Wendy's ignited a social media firestorm when it rolled out its own version of the spicy chicken sandwich. Popeye's, KFC, and Chick-fil-A quickly followed suit, starting a makeshift spicy chicken sandwich war that occasionally ended in real-life gunfire.

What took Texas' beloved Whataburger so long to join the flock? The company says it was perfecting its recipe.

"At Whataburger, we've spent time meticulously crafting the Spicy Chicken Sandwich recipe — and it shows with each bite," says Whataburger's VP of marketing and innovation, Rich Scheffler, in a September 28 release. "We can't wait for our guests to enjoy this extremely flavorful new, limited-time sandwich."

Though it's overshadowed by the spicy chicken news, Whataburger also revealed it's honoring Hatch chile season with its very own sandwich: the Hatch Green Chile Bacon Burger, featuring two beef patties topped with Hatch green chiles, bacon, American cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, and mayo.

Both sandwiches are available for a limited time at all 830 Whataburger restaurants across Texas and nine other states.

This is, in my opinion, the best time of the year to go see a show. There are so many family-friendly offerings just begging to become traditions, and lots of new interpretations of holiday classics.

Plus, there are always one or two non-holiday themes shows, if you need a break from all the tinsel and holly.

Ultimate party house with indoor pool hits market for $745,000 in Fort Worth

Wild house for sale

A seemingly inconspicuous home in east Fort Worth shows that you never really know what kind of wild-and-crazy stuff is going on inside a house - and not to judge a building by its exterior.

The four-bedroom, five-bathroom house at 1809 Carl St., four miles east of downtown Fort Worth, recently hit the market for $745,000. At first glance, it looks like many homes in the area. But a peek at the interior photos shows why it's attracted lots of attention on the Zillow Gone Wild Facebook page and Twitter account.

Called a fusion of “ultimate” party house and “coolest” investment property in its Zillow listing, the home seems to be built around an indoor, ground-heated swimming pool complete with slide and diving board.

Additional party house highlights include:

  • An outdoor kitchen
  • An outdoor shower
  • A hot tub
  • Air hockey and pool tables
  • Astro turf from TCU’s field
  • Party lighting
  • Enough parking for a tour bus
  • Multiple indoor and outdoor entertaining areas

The home, built in 1940, features 7,179 square feet of living space on less than half an acre of land. The property includes the main four-bedroom house plus a loft-style studio back house with a hot tub and underground wine cellar.

Thousands of commenters on Zillow Gone Wild shared their thoughts about the unconventional home. Several of them compared the house to game shows, '80s department stores, and frat houses.

“It’s like an '80s department store and a game show had a baby. I’m overwhelmed and it was only pictures,” one critic wrote.

“This house screams frat house decorated with the entire contents of a furniture warehouse going out of business sale,” another critic commented.

Some commenters said the house had less than innocent undertones.

“There’s $700,000 worth of coke in that green carpet around the pool, guaranteed,” one commenter said.

Another commenter wrote, “Part Dave and Buster’s, part 1980s drug lord. I LOVE IT.”

Other, nicer comments noted the house’s bright, fun colors and the appeal of an indoor swimming pool.

Lance Blann of Dave Perry Miller Real Estate, who has the listing, says the house’s owner is a single, older, fun gentleman who wanted to create a “cool, eclectic” bachelor pad-esque space.

When he first listed the house in early August, Blann expected it to receive more attention than it did. He says many people were interested in visiting the house and filming TikTok videos, but he didn’t get any serious prospective buyers and the attention soon dwindled.

But since the listing was shared in Zillow Gone Wild on December 1, Blann has received an outpouring of calls.

Blann speculates that the house has two target audiences: sports fans who love to host parties, or maybe a multigenerational family. Since the back house is a studio apartment, it could potentially host grandparents or in-laws while the main house could host parents and their kids.

One of his first visitors to the house was a woman who says she grew up there, Blann says. The woman told Blann that her father built the house and enclosed the swimming pool because he was tired of leaves falling in it. Blann says the house’s current owner bought the house and began renovating it about two years ago.

Several Facebook users asked in Zillow Gone Wild whether the house will be available to rent rather than buy, but Blann says the answer is no — the current owner is only interested in selling his party house.

The heated indoor pool has a slide and a diving board.
