The polls are closed and votes have been tallied in the 2016 CultureMap Fort Worth Charity Challenge presented by Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty. Manna Worldwide has emerged victorious to become our charity partner for 2016. The nonprofit earned nearly 40 percent of the more than 3,000 votes cast.

Eight deserving organizations — including The Art Station, Gill Children's Services, Humane Society of North Texas, James L. West Alzheimer's Center, Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County, Samaritan House, and The Women's Center — battled it out in the inaugural competition. The prize? A CultureMap advertising package worth $10,000.

With a mission of rescuing children from the grip of poverty, Fort Worth-based Manna Worldwide operates across the globe, aiding children in 39 countries. The organization is fueled by a desire to fight disease, poverty, illiteracy, and spiritual emptiness, and supports several programs to meet the needs of the world’s children.

Manna’s Water for Life program provides clean water to those who would otherwise go without it, and Manna Freedom focuses on fighting human trafficking around the world.

Current projects include a nutrition center in Lebanon to support Syrian refugees, a medical project in Russia, an orphanage in Guatemala, schools in Honduras and the Philippines, and many more.

Manna sponsors trips each year in partnership with local churches to provide assistance to its projects, while giving travelers of all ages a taste of what life is like for those less fortunate around the world.

"We are extremely excited to have won, and glad our efforts paid off," says a Manna Worldwide spokesperson. "The campaign actually got us in front of a lot of new people just from all the sharing, so we were happy just to participate."

This important center serves more North Texans than its name implies

Charity Profile

Despite its name, the Women’s Center of Tarrant County serves women, men, and children of all backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities in their times of need.

With services that include rape crisis and victim services, violence prevention and education, employment assistance, and general counseling, the Women’s Center assists more than 100,000 people each year.

The Women’s Center also sponsors a number of events throughout the year, including the Holiday Program, which allows individuals and organizations to sponsor a local family who may otherwise go without presents during the holiday season.

The Play It Safe program focuses on age-appropriate scripts and movies that teach children how to recognize and prevent physical and sexual abuse and assault. Individuals and families can seek help from the legal clinic, support groups, and older adult services.

From the rape crisis hotline — open to anyone who has ever been sexually assaulted — and exam support in the event of an assault, to skills training and helping people quickly return to the workforce, the Women’s Center provides a foundation of security for thousands of North Texans.

Fort Worth community fully commits to those impacted by HIV/AIDS

Charity Profile

When Samaritan House was founded in 1991, AIDS was a terminal diagnosis, one that required both extensive medical care and significant emotional support.

As times have changed, and a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS can be managed with a much better outlook, Samaritan House adopted the mission of creating a community to help individuals with HIV/AIDS live the fullest life possible.

It also serves as a supportive housing environment for people and families of those with major health problems, as well as those who are otherwise without housing.

Case management, home healthcare, nutrition services, and life skills programs are just a few of the services and projects Samaritan House has offered residents for more than two decades.

But it is the method in which residents learn the skills needed to move from a fully supported environment to a life of independence and self-sufficiency that is the greatest measure of Samaritan House’s success.

Tarrant County volunteers nourish bodies and souls with meals and more

Charity Profile

With a volunteer force of more than 5,000, Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County serves nearly 4,600 people throughout the county. Not only do residents in need receive meals, but volunteers also deliver items like pet food, fans, blankets, medical equipment, and supplemental groceries.

Meals on Wheels’ mission is to serve homebound individuals while helping them to maintain both dignity and independence, and it has done so since 1973.

Spanning from as far north as Grapevine and to the south in Burleson and Mansfield, from Aledo to Arlington, Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County receives more than 250 applications for assistance each month. Each client and prospective client is assigned a case manager who works with the individual to ensure his or her needs are met.

Almost as nourishing as the food is the friendship that clients form with the volunteers who deliver daily meals. That’s good for the heart and soul.

Fort Worth center supports families facing challenges of Alzheimer’s

Charity Profile

Compassion and personal experience fueled the establishment of the James L. West Alzheimer’s Center, after Eunice P. West experienced firsthand what it is like for families of Alzheimer’s patients — an experience she gained as caregiver to her husband, philanthropist and business leader James L. West.

The center not only provides care to more than 1,200 residents and participants in day programs, but it also mentors medical professionals on the ins and outs of Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia.

James L. West Center also focuses on the needs of family members who decide to care for Alzheimer’s patients at home. The center’s Family Caregiver Training program prepares individuals for the daily management and home safety needs of their family member, and helps with planning for the future and dealing with stress and grief.

By supporting the entire family through diagnosis to end-of-life, the center has been an incredible help to residents in North Texas for more than 20 years.

The event will take place from 4:30-6:30 pm only on Friday, February 3. Location is the 6666 Ranch booth near the south end of Aisle 700 in the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Exhibits Hall.

Cafe with made-to-order mini-doughnuts to open near TCU in south Fort Worth

Doughnut News

Little doughnuts are rolling into south Fort Worth via a new doughnut cafe. Called Batter & Beans, it'll serve doughnuts, coffee, and more, and it's opening at 3548 South Hills Ave., south of TCU in Westcliff Center.

They'll be right around the corner from Cafe Bella [which it should be noted recently won Best Neighborhood Restauant in CultureMap's 2023 Tastemaker Awards].

Batter & Beans will be a family-owned collaboration between Matthew Whip, a partner at Ernst & Young, and his brother-in-law, who worked for a restaurant group in Michigan and brings the food knowhow.

They'll be doing miniature doughnuts, similar to the Pittsburgh-based Peace, Love, and Little Donuts chain (which has one location in Texas, in Southlake).

They're aiming to be open by early fall.

"We'll be doing fresh, made-to-order mini cake doughnuts plus premium coffee we're sourcing out of Chicago, from Metropolis, a small-batch artisan roaster," Whip says. "We're originally from the Chicago area, and that's always been my favorite roaster, and they also roast coffee for Yolk, which has a location in Sundance Square."

The cafe will also offer fresh lemonade, iced tea, and ice cream, for neighbors who want to stop in for a treat at night.

Whip and his family first relocated from the Chicago area to North Texas in 2018, then moved down the street from the shop last year. It's a small storefront, about 920 square feet, and they're currently in the final stages of design and permitting.

"There's lots of kids in this neighborhood, and I think a place with mini doughnuts would do well," Whip says.

It was only after they signed on to do the shop that they learned from a neighbor that the space they're taking had good doughnut karma, with a longtime history as a doughnut shop, most recently a place called Donut Palace. Sadly, it closed during the pandemic. Now the doughnuts will return.
