Tony Sigel, senior conservator of objects and sculpture, Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts, will present a free evening lecture titled "Sculpture Conservation in Action: Bernini's Modello for the Fountain of the Moor.”
Sigel will describe the conservation treatment of Bernini's magnificent terracotta Modello for the Fountain of the Moor. The almost year-long process, which involved the disassembly of the damaged sculpture and removal of centuries of grime and poorly executed earlier restorations, led to revelations about the 400-year life of the sculpture and the methods Bernini employed to create it.
