Fort Worth ranks among 10 best places to be a freelancer

Fort Worth is brimming with freelance talent — and for good reason. Not only is there freedom in working for yourself, a new study says Fort Worth is one of the best cities to do it.
NerdWallet looked at stats like affordability, percentage of self-employed workers, and cellphone coverage in the 50 most populous U.S. cities to determine the rankings. Fort Worth ranks No. 8.
Almost 6.4 percent of Fort Worth residents are self-employed, and NerdWallet reports that self-employed locals make about $1,616 per month after taxes. The median rent here in 2014 was $913 a month. The average health insurance premium is $226, and the monthly cellphone cost is $84.
"After paying working costs, freelancers will have 24 percent of their income left every month, the second-lowest percentage in the top 10," NerdWallet says. "But on the plus side, Fort Worth has the second-best cellphone carrier coverage of our top 10 cities."
It seems freelancers across the Lone Star State have it made, as four other Texas cities are in the top 20, including Austin, No. 1, and Dallas, No. 3. Houston ranks No. 15, and San Antonio follows at No. 19.
