While the majority of events around Fort Worth have either been postponed or canceled, there are a few that have popped up to offer the masses some entertainment while still adhering to the social distancing necessary during the coronavirus pandemic.
Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. While they're not all outside of the house, they all promise to provide a nice distraction from the everyday life.
Thursday, July 16
Jubilee Theatre presents How I Got Over
After a couple of weeks of live performances, Jubilee Theatre has shifted its latest production to virtual only due to the recent spike of COVID-19 infections in Texas. The musical revue celebrates the legendary Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson, and other gospel greats.The filmed version of the production, available through July 26, can be rented for a discounted ticket price of $20.
Amphibian Stage Productions presents The True History of the Tragic Life & Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, the Ugliest Woman in the World
Amphibian Stage Productions will give theater lovers something unique with a virtual version of their 2012 production of Julia Pastrana, which was performed in the dark. Using only a 3D soundscape engineered with the cinematic Dolby Atmos surround sound, they have created an entirely new auditory event that transports audiences into Julia Pastrana’s world of traveling circuses and sideshows. Ticket holders are encouraged to dim the lights, turn up their headphones, and prepare for an immersive listening encounter. The production will be available for streaming through July 30.
Stockyards Round Up Scavenger Hunt
For the past three weeks, the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards has been offering the Round Up Scavenger Hunt. It's a self-guided search of the area where participants can capture photos of themselves and loved ones at famous landmarks throughout the district for a chance to win the grand prize of a hotel stay at Hyatt Place Stockyards and tickets to local venues. The contest will continue through Sunday.
Saturday, July 18
Fort Worth Community Arts Center presents Darcie Book: "Material World" closing day
Saturday will be the final day to view Darcie Book's exhibition "Material World" at Fort Worth Community Arts Center. Book invites visitors to share the sense of discovery she experiences in the studio, where she develops innovative processes to explore acrylic paint as a sculptural material. Her work pushes the boundaries and possibilities of painting by navigating the realms between the two- and three-dimensional.
Panther Island Pavilion presents Rockin’ the River
After a one-week delay, Rockin' the River will return for a five-week run at Panther Island Pavilion with a modified format to allow for implementation of additional social distancing and health and safety protocols. Kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats are available for rent, or guests can bring their own flotation devices to enjoy a series of music performances, headlined this week by Giovannie & The Hired Guns.
Sunday, July 19
Panther Island Pavilion presents Sunday Funday
Sunday Funday is a day of relaxation and fun in the sun at Panther Island Pavilion. Pedal boats area available to rent, and there will be acoustic live music shows, yoga classes, dog adoptions, and more. There will also be food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Per the current orders from Gov. Greg Abbott, tube rentals have been suspended, but visitors are allowed to bring their own tubes.
A socially-distanced Rockin' the River will return to Panther Island Pavilion on July 18, taking place weekly through August 15.
