Magnolia at the Modern: They Shot the Piano Player
A New York music journalist goes on a quest to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of young Brazilian piano virtuoso, Tenorio Jr. A celebratory origin story of the world-renowned Latino musical movement Bossa Nova, They Shot the Piano Player captures a fleeting time bursting with creative freedom at a turning point in Latin American history in the 1960s and 1970s, just before the continent was engulfed by totalitarian regimes. The film will screen eight times through Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
An Evening with Kevin Von Erich
Iconic wrestler Kevin Von Erich is having a moment. Von Erich, now 66, was the subject of the 2023 movie The Iron Claw, starring Zac Efron. He comes to Fort Worth with his one-man show, “Stories From the Top Rope,” in which he shares insight into his career, personal triumphs, and tragedies. The evening will be hosted by sports reporter Dale Hansen and feature a special guest appearance by legendary WCCW referee, booker, and promoter David Manning. Jubilee Theatre presents The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin
What's a black girl from sunny Southern California to do? White people are blowing up black girls in Birmingham churches. Black people are shouting "Black is beautiful" while straightening their hair and coveting light skin. Viveca Stanton's answer? Slap on a bubbly smile and be as white as you can be. In a humorous and pointed coming-of-age story spanning the '60s through the '90s, Viveca blithely sails through the confusing worlds of racism, sexism, and Broadway showbiz until she's forced to face the devastating effect self-denial has had on her life. The production runs through May 5 at Jubilee Theatre.
The SteelDrivers in concert
It's a little weird that bluegrass group The SteelDrivers got more popular after their original lead singer (and current country superstar) Chris Stapleton left, but the facts are the facts. After releasing two albums with Stapleton, both of which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts, the group has released three more albums, each of which made it all the way to No. 1. They'll play at Billy Bob's Texas in support of their 2023 album, Tougher Than Nails.
Saturday, March 30
Arlington Museum of Art Grand Opening exhibits
The Arlington Museum of Art has moved from its longtime location in downtown Arlington to join the Arlington Entertainment District near the city's three stadiums. They'll celebrate their grand opening with two new exhibitions: "Pompeii: The Immortal City," in which guests will hear and feel the roar of Mount Vesuvius erupting while they take in the wonder of original artworks and newly-discovered artifacts; and "One Point Five Degrees," the museum's first-ever, immersive art experience that draws its name from the 2018 report on the threats from global climate change. Both exhibitions will remain on display through June 23.
Tyler Halverson in concert
Country singer Tyler Halverson plays self-described “Amerijuana Music,” with inspirations ranging from Garth Brooks to Boyz II Men. He recently signed with Atlantic Records, releasing the singles "Cut You Loose" and "Her." He'll play at Billy Bob's Texas for the second time in less than a year.
