DFW-based Smoothie King pitches new smoothies to Ozempic patients
DFW smoothie chain Smoothie King has debuted a new menu of drinks they claim are tailored for those taking Ozempic-style weight loss drugs.
The menu — which has a name that rolls off the tongue: the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) Support Menu — features five smoothies aimed at those using weight loss medications like Ozempic that regulate appetite.
The drinks feature fiber and lots of protein, and were developed with registered dietician Molly Kimball who says in a statement that the smoothies "incorporate essential ingredients to support the effectiveness of GLP-1 and promote overall metabolic health for all individuals, whether they’re taking GLP-1 medications or just looking for a hydrating, protein-rich smoothie option."
The smoothies come fortified with massive doses of protein, which they seem to be suggesting can serve as a stand-in for or supplement to meals being skipped by people on appetite-suppressing diets.
One of the drinks has a whopping 45 grams of protein.
If you google "how much protein should you eat per day?" you get a wide range of replies, so it's not something with a consensus, although the average seems to be about 50 grams a day. If you google "do Americans consume too much protein?" the response is "yes."
The new menu features the following:
- Gladiator GLP-1: chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry protein flavor, with choice of almonds, almond butter, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, organic ginger, Kale, carrots, or spinach
- Slim N Trim GLP-1 Mango Greens: mangoes, Greek yogurt, Califia Farms almond milk, Slim N Trim Blend, organic kale, ginger, and spinach
- Keto Champ GLP-1 Berry: Califia Farms almond milk, almond butter, blueberries, raspberries, Keto Protein Blend, and cacao. A chocolate version has almond milk, almond butter, cocoa, Keto Protein Blend, and Stevia sweetener
- The Activator Recovery GLP-1 Almond Berry: strawberries, blueberries, almond milk, coconut water, Gladiator Protein strawberry
- Power Meal Slim GLP-1 with choice of chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry
“We know that every individual’s path is different, and with the rising use of GLP-1 medications across the country and our customer base, we want to ensure that Smoothie King provides the nutritional resources to match,” says Wan Kim, CEO of Smoothie King, in a statement. “Our smoothies are more than just a delicious treat—they’re a power packed meal on-the-go to help our guests stay on track with their goals.”
