Broadway at the Bass lines up a history-making musical season in Fort Worth

Performing Arts Fort Worth has announced the 2017-18 Broadway at the Bass season, and it's a history-maker. For the first time ever, the season is made up of brand-new, direct-from-Broadway shows, all of which are making their Bass Hall debuts.

“This season marks an important milestone for us. It’s the first time we’ve presented a Broadway at the Bass season made up of all-new shows,” says Dione Kennedy, president and CEO of Performing Arts Fort Worth, in a release.

While the five-musical season — with two add-on shows — boasts some impressive titles, it does not contain the one that has everyone in a frenzy: Hamilton. Hamilfans will still have to travel to Dallas in 2018 to see the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning blockbuster.

Three of the titles are being co-presented with Dallas Summer Musicals, while the other two are in AT&T Performing Arts Center's current Broadway Series lineup.

Something Rotten! starts the season off January 17-21, 2018, followed by Finding Neverland March 20-25, 2018. These are the two that will be playing the Winspear this summer. From DSM's upcoming season are Waitress (June 19-24, 2018), Love Never Dies (August 7-12, 2018), and School of Rock (August 28-September 2, 2018).

Special add-ons include Sister's Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold (December 13-17, 2017, in the McDavid Studio) and Chicago (February 16-18, 2018). If those sound familiar, that might be because WaterTower Theatre in Addison just produced the nun-centric mystery this past December, while MainStage in Irving hosted the merry murderesses in November.

Four Day Weekend finds new Fort Worth home at neighboring theater

About a month and a half after Four Day Weekend announced it would be leaving its longtime home in Sundance Square, a replacement venue has been named.

The popular improv troupe will set up at Stage West, a little over a mile away — and just across I-30 — at 821 W. Vickery Blvd.

The first performance at FDW's new home will be Saturday, August 3.

David Wilk, a founding member of Four Day Weekend, calls the move “a great collaboration between two well known brands in the Fort Worth community. Stage West is just five minutes from Sundance Square and is an intimate venue in Fort Worth’s creative neighborhood of Near Southside. It feels a lot like Christmas and getting a shiny new toy! We can hardly wait to move into the theater to make people laugh, while making new friends and seeing old acquaintances.”

Stage West executive producer Dana Schultes says of the collaboration: “When we learned Four Day Weekend was losing its downtown space, the only response was 'come over here.' Simply put: A thriving arts scene makes Fort Worth better. Plus, we have multiple performance spaces! Finally, the Near Southside Arts district is a perfect landing spot. It was a no-brainer on our part to extend a helping hand to a fellow Fort Worth arts institution.”

The critically acclaimed improvisational comedy group needed to leave their space in downtown Fort Worth following Sundance Square management’s decision not to renew their lease, which runs through the end of July.

Four Day Weekend’s legacy began with a six-week run at Casa on the Square in 1997, which has led to a 27-year relationship with Sundance Square.

Four Day Weekend has a second location in Dallas, near Greenville Avenue, which will continue to operate.
