Weekend Event Planner
These are the 8 best things to do in Fort Worth this weekend
Memorial Day weekend means the annual return of great golf to Fort Worth — even if everyone's favorite tournament does have a strange new name. You can also attend two new theater productions, two racing events, and celebrate the start of summer at one of the area's premier resorts.
Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.
Thursday, May 27
Dean & Deluca Invitational
Forget the incongruousness of the sponsor name, as there's not a Dean & Deluca within 1,000 miles of Fort Worth, and focus on the great golf that will be on display at Colonial Country Club for the next four days. Dallas-Fort Worth's own Jordan Spieth leads a field that will also include Adam Scott, Ryan Palmer, Brandt Snedeker, Ian Poulter, and many others.
Stage West Theatre presents Wait Until Dark
Wait Until Dark is a classic thriller that pits a lone blind woman against a group of ruthless criminals. The gang, hell-bent on retrieving a diamond-filled doll from the woman's apartment, finds out they’re up against a surprisingly resourceful opponent, one who knows that the only way to win is to play by her own rules. The production will run through June 26.
Richard Petty Driving Experience
The Richard Petty Driving Experience offers real-life racing thrills by putting drivers behind the wheel of a 600-horsepower NASCAR race car. Taking place at Texas Motor Speedway, participants can choose anything from a ride-along to driving up to 50 laps behind the wheel of an actual race car. The experience will run through Sunday.
Friday, May 27
TORC - The Off-Road Championship
Racing fans can return to Texas Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday for the Off-Road Championship, as the 900-horsepower race trucks of TORC return to the dirt track. The best drivers on dirt will battle the high-flying jumps, searing sweepers, and grueling competition. Fans can check out the on-track action, open pit area, and post-race track walk.
Gaylord Texan Resort presents SummerFest
Gaylord Texan Resort is hosting festive family events all summer, with Alice in Wonderland-themed activities for families, as well as the grand opening of an all-new $5 million water play structure at its outdoor water park. The festival includes a 4-D walk-through “Wonderland Adventure” attraction, giant sand sculptures, a free 3-D visual light show, and much more. The festival will take place every day through September 5.
Magnolia at the Modern presents Hockney
Hockney weaves together a portrait of the multifaceted artist David Hockney, using frank interviews with close friends and never-before-seen footage from his own personal archive. One of the great surviving icons of the 1960s, Hockney may have started his career with almost instant success, but in private he has struggled with his art, relationships, and the tragedy of AIDS, making his optimism and sense of adventure truly uplifting. The film will screen six times at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth through Sunday.
Jubilee Theatre presents Livin’ Fat
In Jubilee Theatre's latest, Livin' Fat, the Cooper family is poor, but happy. Their son, David, has taken a job as a bank janitor, and when the bank is robbed, the thieves drop an unnoticed bundle of cash at David’s feet. After he decides to buy presents for the entire family, their scruples are tested. The production will run through June 26.
Texas Ballet Theater presents First Looks
Texas Ballet Theater's 2015-2016 season comes to a close with First Looks, featuring a trio of performances. Running through Sunday at Bass Performance Hall, it will include Without Borders, a world premiere by Val Caniparoli; Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16; and Voluntaries by American choreographer Glen Tetley.
