Cecilia Beaux: "Gilded Angst" explores the remarkable career of one of America's most distinguished portrait painters. Featuring more than 50 paintings and preparatory studies spanning from the 1870s through the 1920s, the exhibition examines the psychological depth and frank portrayal of Gilded Age society that distinguishes Cecilia Beaux’s portraiture.
Co-organized by the Carter and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the exhibition brings together works from collections across the United States alongside the Carter's recent acquisition, Mrs. John Frederick Lewis and Her Son, John Frederick Lewis, Jr. (1908). The exhibition traces Beaux's evolution from intimate family portraits to celebrated society commissions while highlighting her portrayals of pioneering professional women and the complex dynamics of domestic life.
In addition, a newly commissioned immersive installation by contemporary artist Darren Waterston further explores the psychological undercurrents of Beaux's work, inviting visitors to experience the simultaneous beauty, splendor, and unease of the Gilded Age.
