Artspace111 will present the solo exhibition, "BigBoldTexas," featuring artist Jon Flaming. Flaming creates large-scale canvases complete with larger-than-life characters that speak to vast and bold themes of the West.
Honoring the rich history of ranch hands, farmers and tool pushers, Flaming’s art draws on many influences: a mixed bag of styles from heroes of the genre like Remington, Russell, Dixon and Dunton. His style calls to mind a fresh take on primitive, outsider, folk, modern, contemporary and naive art.
The spirit of the West is heroic, gritty and confident, but tenderly values family, generosity and community, themes all found within his work. Flaming’s graphic style fuses iconic western palates and symbols like the cowboy or cowgirl, bucking broncos and rodeo regalia to create a distinct visual voice to capture the heart of the Lone Star State at large.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on view through June 1.
