Wes Coke’s paintings begin with the human figure but are less concerned with depicting a specific story than with creating a space for observation. His subjects occupy moments that feel private or suspended, inviting viewers to consider what may be happening beyond what is immediately visible.
The exhibition takes its title from this interior space, not a particular thought or prescribed perspective, but the experience of being somewhere within one. Coke leaves his paintings deliberately unresolved, allowing the relationship between figure, space and viewer to remain open.
Pattern plays an important role throughout this body of work. Stripes, checkerboards, and plaids move between clothing, interiors, and the spaces surrounding each figure, creating a visual rhythm that connects the paintings. These familiar patterns bring a sense of order to the compositions while adding movement, energy, and the subtle tension beneath the surface.
Color is equally integral to the work. Coke uses distinct palettes to establish the atmosphere and visual structure of each painting, sometimes allowing color to dominate the composition and at other times using it to pull forms forward or soften their presence. The result is a body of work that can feel calm while carrying an underlying sense of tension.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on view through October 17.
