Moncrief Cancer Institute, in conjunction with the Texas Christian University School of Art, presents "A Sense of Home," featuring works by Carol Benson, curated by Lauren Hathaway.

Throughout her prolific career, Benson has explored the physical and psychological experience of "home" as a site of shelter and memory, using a variety of methods and materials. She considers practical aspects of architecture and often employs an iconic symbol of a building that most people would recognize or refer to as a house or dwelling. She also reflects on the idea of clothes as a protective, flexible home for our bodies, and sometimes uses textiles to make sculptural works.

Underscoring much of Benson’s work is her appreciation for nature and her idea of "home" extends beyond architecture and the body, to a macrocosmic view of the planet. Whether depicting plants and birds in paintings or creating small sculptures with twigs and yarn suggestive of nests, cocoons or other homes for vulnerable animals, Benson draws attention to questions of stewardship and human interaction in the natural world. She acknowledges the important role the environment plays in shaping our idea of home.

In this exhibition organized by emerging curator Lauren Hathaway, Benson’s artworks, ranging from paintings to small sculptures, encourage viewers to consider the significance of nature while reflecting on their own ideas of home.
