The moral climate proves challenging in Kenneth Lonergan’s Lobby Hero, set in the night-shift lobby of a Manhattan apartment building. The play depicts what happens when good intentions intersect with personal flaws.
Jeff, a young, aimless security guard, struggles to find purpose while dealing with William, his strict supervisor. A principled man, William faces his own dilemma when pressured to cover for his brother, who is implicated in a murder.
And then there are police officer colleagues Dawn and Bill. Dawn, the rookie (and the object of Jeff’s affection), struggles with self-doubt following her use of excessive force during an arrest. Bill, her manipulative senior partner, is having an affair with a tenant and has no problem bending rules for personal gain.
Jeff becomes embroiled in their conflicts while trying to do the right thing, often making the situation even more complicated.
