Moncrief Cancer Institute, in conjunction with the TCU School of Art, will present "Stay," curated by Chris Wicker, featuring new paintings by Fort Worth-based artist Victoria Gonzales.
Gonzales creates a dreamlike pictorial space in which the viewer is invited to remain while contemplating themes of recollective memory, home, and suspension of time. Drawing from memories living in Boerne, Texas, and her current life in Fort Worth, Gonzales uses vibrant colors and layering of materials to record and highlight everyday yet impactful moments.
Fractured imagery of afternoon walks, gathering eggs in chicken coops, and shared familial activities such as baking are paired with digital drawing, thread, and washes of paint. Gonzales’ methods emphasize the nature and significance of recalling a memory through selective pushing and pulling of her subject matter.
With this partnership between materials and subject matter, Gonzales evokes complexities surrounding recollection. Commonplace memories met with endless compositions crafted by Gonzales invite audiences to remain and explore abstracted space in "Stay."
