Seven musicals and two add-on shows comprise Performing Arts Fort Worth's 2018-19 Broadway at the Bass season. Three of the titles line up with Dallas Summer Musicals' upcoming season, one is shared with AT&T Performing Arts Center's season, another three are new to Fort Worth, and several others are familiar blockbusters making their return to the area.
It's a season with "a little something for everyone," according to PAFW's president and CEO, Dione Kennedy. The subscriber add-ons kick things off, with The Illusionists, a showcase of five of the most incredible illusionists on earth, playing October 19-20, 2018, and Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, a Tony-winning contemporary take on the classic tale, playing November 15-18, 2018.
The Book of Mormon plays a quick return engagement to start the regular season: January 22-27, 2019. If you somehow missed Trey Parker and Matt Stone's award-winning and utterly inappropriate musical about Mormon missionaries before, now's your chance.
Up next is Jersey Boys, the bio-musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Like the majority of this season's shows, this one is in town for only a few days: February 12-17, 2019. With a catalog of hit songs and the compelling story of how a couple of hometown boys skyrocketed to the top of the recording charts, the musical is a must for any Behind the Music addict.
Ever wanted to know how Emilio and Gloria Estefan triumphed over adversity and tragedy to reach the top of the pop world? On Your Feet! can tell you. Yes, you're probably going to sing along. It runs April 10-14, 2019.
Next up is Anastasia, based on the 1997 animated film and the 1956 cinematic classic. The book by playwright Terrence McNally and a lush new score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens changes the story of the missing Romanov princess slightly, removing the villainous Rasputin and replacing the historical figure with a ruthless Soviet officer. Audiences are transported from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s as a young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. It runs May 28-June 2, 2019.
The new production of Les Misérables that recently closed on Broadway is now out on tour, with new staging and re-imagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. But all your favorite songs are still there, from "I Dreamed a Dream" to "One Day More" to "On My Own." See it June 25-30, 2019.
Still currently running on Broadway, A Bronx Tale is the musical version of the play and movie originally written by Chazz Palminteri. Directed by Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks, with songs by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and three-time Tony Award nominee Glenn Slater, the show brings audiences to 1960s New York, where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he'd love to be. It runs July 23-28, 2019.
The sun rises on Bartlett Sher's revival of Fiddler on the Roof from August 20-25, 2019. The Tony-winning director brings a fresh and authentic vision to this beloved theatrical masterpiece, which was written by Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock, and Sheldon Harnick. Acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter has provided new movement and dance, based on the original staging by Jerome Robbins, to introduce a new generation to the show's family, faith, and tradition.
