Teach Across Texas
Texas makes the grade as one of the top 10 states for teachers
School is back in session, and if you're teaching in Texas, you've made a wise choice. The Lone Star State is the eighth best for teachers, according to a study conducted by WalletHub.
The financial website compared 50 U.S. states and D.C. across two key categories: "job opportunity and competition" and "academic and work environment," weighted at 70 percent and 30 percent, respectively.
Texas ranks No. 1 for opportunity. The Lone Star State boasts above average starting salaries and median annual salaries for teachers. Additionally, we rank No. 13 for 10-year change in teacher salaries.
We rank 28th in the environment category, which includes factors such as WalletHub's school systems rankings, teacher effectiveness, student-teacher ratios, school safety, public school spending per student, commute time, and more. It seems Texas has some work to do regarding school safety; we come in below average for that, at No. 30.
Teachers in Hawaii, West Virginia, and Arizona, the three worst states, might consider a move to New Jersey, Massachusetts, or Illinois, the top three states for teachers.
