Cozy Catfe in Arlington lets you hang out with cats up for adoption
With the current cat overpopulation crisis in Dallas-Fort Worth, every little bit helps, so paws up to Cozy Catfe, a cat cafe in Arlington doing its part to help local kitties.
Located in south Arlington at 740 S.W. Green Oaks Blvd. in a small shopping center anchored by a World Market store, the shop is from Brandie Retana, who left her career in corporate recruiting during the pandemic to open the cafe two years ago.
“I was doing some soul searching and really trying to figure out what my passion was in life and what I should be doing,” she said. A cat lover since childhood, Retana decided to turn her passion into her day job.
"I was just praying about it and a little voice inside me said ‘you can do this'," she says.
It's mostly a one-woman show, although Retana gets a hand from her husband Cruz and some volunteers. It's open six days a week (closed on Wednesdays), basically a place for those who want to hang out with cats. Entry fee for one hour is $15, or $25 for two hours, and comes with free coffee or soda. (Bagged chips, cookies, crackers and the most popular choice, freeze dried candy, are available for purchase.) You can make a reservation online.
The cafe can accommodate up to 20 cats at a time; there are currently 14 cats for adoption on the books.
Like other cat cafes such as The Charming Cat Café in Lewisville, the Casual Cat Café in Richland Hills, and Whiskers and Soda in East Dallas, Cozy provides a place for the cats a chance to socialize and gives potential adopters a chance to see the cats in action.
Retana specializes in cats that are 6 months or older, since those are harder to get adopted than the kittens everyone loves. All the cats available for adoption are listed on her website (as well as those that have already been adopted).
It's a flat $100 fee for a cat adoption, regardless of age or breed. "It's just $100 for whoever you fall in love with," she says.
She gets cats from local shelters, including the Arlington Animal Shelter, Grand Prairie Paws, Mansfield Animal Shelter, and the Humane Society of Irving. At the Arlington shelter, she pays the standard adoption rate, but the other shelters have waived adoption fees since she is running a cat cafe.
Her cafe is not a 501c3, meaning it is not an IRS-approved charity, a status sometimes used as an unofficial indicator (but not a requirement) of whether an animal rescue is legit, since acquiring 501c3 status subjects you to a certain degree of scrutiny and accountability. Acquiring 501c3 status can be a difficult process, especially for a smaller outfit. Retana says she's working on it.
She's been too busy adopting out cats: To date, Cozy Catfe has placed 243 cats for adoption.
"For my screening process, I do an interview in-house, I have a whole list of questions, and I have turned people away who have said they will keep the cat in a cage," she says.
Her big thing is events-with-cats: cat yoga, painting with kitties, crocheting with cats, crafts & cats, trivia night, murder mystery parties.
"It's just our unique way to do kitty adoptions, where you can come in and drink a beverage, and meet your new best friend," Retana says. "We are very happy to be here for two years and hope to be here for three."
The Cozy Catfe will celebrate its second anniversary on Saturday, January 27 from 11 am-6 pm with cupcakes, raffle, and more. Attendees can get 25 percent off by wearing cat-related attire.
