A new immersive experience at the Fort Worth Stockyards gives visitors a closer look at the longhorn cattle that helped shape Texas history. Called Legacy of the Longhorn, the show takes place Monday through Thursday at Cowtown Coliseum, immediately following the Fort Worth Herd’s cattle drive down Exchange Avenue.

The event is a partnership among Cowtown Coliseum, the Fort Worth Herd, and PBR (Professional Bull Riders). A release describes it as "an immersive, family-friendly production celebrating the history, heritage and culture of the American West."

The 45-minute show combines live longhorns and Fort Worth Herd drovers with 19th-century wagons, historical photos, theatrical storytelling, and large-scale video.

Actor Forrie J. Smith, best known as Lloyd on Yellowstone, serves as narrator and trail boss in original video segments that trace the longhorn's arrival in the United States and its evolution into a symbol of Texas, the release says.

The show also uses AI to animate historical images. One segment recreates Christopher Columbus unloading longhorns on the beaches of America, while another depicts Cowtown Coliseum being built nearly 120 years ago.

“With more than 10 million visitors annually to the Fort Worth Stockyards, and thousands gathering on Exchange Avenue to watch the signature Fort Worth Herd cattle drive, we wanted to create an experience that captures the spirit of the Old West while offering a deeper understanding of the American longhorn and its place in our history,” PBR CEO Sean Gleason says in the release. “Legacy of the Longhorn takes this signature experience to the next level, giving guests an up-close look at these remarkable animals and the opportunity to learn about the history, culture and legacy they represent.”

The show is designed for visitors of all ages and incorporates Western artifacts and live demonstrations inside Cowtown Coliseum, which opened in 1908 as the first indoor rodeo arena in the United States.

After each performance, guests can go onto the arena floor for photos with Fort Worth Herd drovers and historic wagons.

Cowtown Coliseum concessions will also offer Tex's Special, an $8 lunch of chopped brisket, Southern baked beans, and homemade cornbread.

Legacy of the Longhorn will run most weeks on Monday through Thursday at 12:30 pm. General admission tickets are $20 with open seating.
