Fort Worth restaurant Hot Box Biscuit Club closes after 5 years
A restaurant specializing in biscuits has closed: Hot Box Biscuit Club, which had been open at 313 S. Main St. since 2019, closed, apparently abruptly, after five years.
The restaurant conveyed the news via a banner on its website that said "PERMANENTLY CLOSED. Thanks for 5 amazing years Fort Worth! Grateful for the love & support."
Representatives from the restaurant did not respond to emails or messages.
Hot Box was founded by Sarah Hooton and Matt Mobley, first starting out as a biscuit-themed pop-up, hosting monthly brunch pop-ups at restaurants around town for nearly three years. During their pop-up heyday, they were a smash in the foodie set, regularly selling out events.
Hooton attended the Culinary Institute of America and worked as a pastry chef for 20 years, while Mobley worked in several restaurants in Dallas and Fort Worth before landing at Le Cordon Bleu as a culinary instructor, where he taught for 10 years.
In October 2019, they took the next step, opening at Main + Broad, the mixed-use project that restored a historic, nearly century-old building. The restaurant was open for breakfast and lunch with fried chicken and biscuit sandwiches, which were a hot trend going into the pandemic.
And in 2020, they won a CultureMap Tastemakers Award for Best New Restaurant.
The fact that it's five years to the day would seem to hint that the lease was up, although one employee stated that the staff were not informed of the closure until the end of closing day.
In promising news, they seem to not be going away entirely: Their goodbye note also said to "Click on link below for possible December events."
