Whataburger adds trendy new item to breakfast program: iced coffee
Texas' most famous fast-food joint has entered the highly competitive world of gourmet coffee: Beginning Monday May 20, Whataburger is serving a new iced coffee and a reworked version of its hot coffee.
According to a release, the new iced coffee is made with a blend of Arabica beans sourced from Colombia, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It's available black or in three flavors: vanilla, caramel, or mocha.
The chain has always served hot coffee, but never iced coffee and never in flavors.
They're also taking their regular coffee program more seriously, says Whataburger senior VP/CMO Scott Hudler.
“We sourced beans from the coffee belts of Central and South America, and our menu team spent significant time researching and testing new recipes,” Hudler says. ‘The result is a premium, proprietary blend with the quality our guests expect to fuel them 24/7. And with the addition of Vanilla, Mocha, and Caramel flavors, you can customize your coffee to have it ‘just like you like it.’”
The hot coffee is based on a medium roast and is said to have a medium body and a smooth finish. Best of all, it’s available 24/7.
Drive-thru coffee has become a huge deal, as has iced coffee. A number of chains have opened in the Dallas area in recent years such as Dutch Brothers, 7 Brew, PJ's, Scooter's, and 151. In addition, Tim Horton's, the Canadian chain that specializes in doughnuts and coffee, is coming to DFW in late 2024.
But the biggest driver is probably CosMc's, McDonald's new beverage drive-thru concept, which debuted in Texas with its first location in Dallas in March, and at least two more on the way.
Prices at Whataburger start at $3.39 for a 16-ounce, medium iced coffee and $1.39 for a 12-ounce, small hot coffee. Diners may order it for dine-in, to-go, drive-thru, or curbside pickup via the restaurant's website.
