Weekend Event Planner
These are the 8 best things to do in Fort Worth this weekend
As we inch ever closer to the start of the school year and the end of summer, you can stave off any feelings of dread by taking in any of the fun events in and around the Fort Worth area this weekend. They include three intriguing theater productions, your final chance to rock out on the river for 2016, and one hellagood singer.
Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.
Thursday, August 11
Rockin' the River season finale
All summer long, a series of great singers and bands have taken the stage on the shore of the Trinity River at Panther Island Pavilion to entertain the floating masses. Your last chance to join in on the fun is actually two chances, as Dirty River Boys and the Cody Bryan Band perform on Thursday, followed by a special concert on Saturday featuring Cooder Graw, Red Shahan, Aaron Einhouse, and Statesboro Revue.
Stage West Theatre presents Bootycandy
The latest from Stage West Theatre is Bootycandy, Robert O’Hara’s wildly imaginative, incendiary satire that is a kaleidoscope of sketches portraying growing up gay and African-American. The vivacious, outrageous, and soulful play tests how we talk about human desire and racial stereotypes at home, in church, and on the corner. The production runs through September 11.
Friday, August 12
Brick Dallas/Fort Worth
Prepare to build, play, and be entertained at Brick Dallas/Fort Worth at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. Along with jaw-dropping creations are live-action build demonstrations, workshops, contests, the official LEGO® store, and exclusive Brick show merchandise. The convention takes place through Sunday.
Magnolia at the Modern presents Our Little Sister
In Our Little Sister, the latest in the Magnolia at the Modern series at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, three sisters live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their father, absent from the family home for the last 15 years, dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral and meet their shy teenage half-sister. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and it screens six times through Sunday.
Stolen Shakespeare Guild presents Singin' in the Rain
Given its name, you wouldn't normally expect the Stolen Shakespeare Guild to present the classic musical Singin' in the Rain, but that just goes to show how versatile it is. Including every unforgettable scene, song, and dance you love from the movie, this production will have you humming on your way out. It runs at Fort Worth Community Arts Center through August 28.
Ohlook Performing Arts Center presents Citizen Drumpf
The folks at Ohlook Performing Arts Center in Grapevine are known for being a little provocative with their choices, but this one may top them all. This brand-new musical follows the life and times of Donald Drumpf, from his beginnings as a poor little rich boy to his candidacy for the hugest position in the world, or at least the United States. And in case you think the production is aimed at just one person, the musical targets just about everyone, as most of the current political candidates get their chance onstage. Having started last week, it finishes its run on Saturday.
Saturday, August 13
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents Anime at the Modern
The second weekend in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth's Anime at the Modern series brings two more masterpieces. First up is When Marnie Was There, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and described as "Ghibli Gothic." The second film, Only Yesterday, finds a young woman contemplating the arc of her life and wondering if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self.
Gwen Stefani in concert with Eve
The fact that you can get in to see pop superstar Gwen Stefani, as well as her opening act, Eve, for as little as $10 (courtesy of a 4 for $40 lawn seating deal) has to be one of biggest steals in recent memory. Fresh off her stint on The Voice, Stefani is killing it with her most recent album, This is What the Truth Feels Like, which details her love for boyfriend Blake Shelton.
