North Central Ballet
North Central Ballet will do a gentler version of the classic Nutcracker ballet. Called “The Gentle Nutcracker," it's a sensory-friendly holiday performance coming to the IM Terrell Performing Arts Center in Fort Worth.
According to a release, The Gentle Nutcracker will be a specially adapted, sensory-friendly performance designed to make the magic of ballet accessible to all audiences, including those with sensory sensitivities, autism spectrum disorders, or other developmental differences.
The performance will take place Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 pm at the IM Terrell Performing Arts Center in Fort Worth.
Sensory-friendly performances are thoughtfully crafted to provide a warm and inclusive environment, suited for families with children on the autism spectrum or those with sensory sensitivities. These performances are also beneficial for individuals who would appreciate a more relaxed setting.
Things that make a production sensory friendly include reduced sound levels, especially loud and surprising noises, keeping house lights half lit, and relaxing the house rules so that people can get up and move around The use of electronic devices is permitted, and people are allowed to talk freely during the performance.
The Gentle Nutcracker production has been modified with:
- Lowered music volume and gentle lighting
- Relaxed theater environment — audience members may move, talk, or take breaks as needed
- A shortened performance time
- Designated quiet areas staffed by volunteers
"This performance opens the door for children who might not otherwise be able to experience live theater,” says North Central Ballet Executive & Artistic Director Leslie Jordan in a statement. “Our goal is to create a joyful, judgment-free environment where every family feels included in the holiday tradition.”
North Central Ballet’s Nutcracker is in its 31st annual production.
