Charming Fort Worth neighbor named second best city in Texas to retire
Locals living in the charming small town of Granbury may have picked the perfect long-term home: A new study ranks it the No. 2 best city to retire in Texas.
Website and financial resource SmartAsset examined three key factors to generate a “best place to retire index”: income and sales taxes; the number of doctors’ offices, recreation centers, and retirement centers per 1,000 residents; and the size of the senior population.
What makes Granbury a top place for retirees to settle down? Seniors make up 29.7 percent of the city's population, and the tax rate of 15.3 percent is among the lowest on the list. While there are only five doctors' offices per 1,000 residents, Granbury boasts 2.1 recreation centers and 0.8 retirement centers per 1,000 people.
The top place to retire in Texas is Katy, located just outside of Houston. Four other Houston-area suburbs appear on SmartAsset’s top 10: Richmond (No. 6), Tomball (No. 7), Webster (No. 8), and Humble (No. 9).
Hill Country favorite Fredericksburg is the No. 5 place to retire in Texas and boasts the highest population of seniors on the list, at 30 percent. No. 3 Woodway (just outside of Waco) and No. 4 Livingston (located north of Houston) round out the top five cities in Texas to retire. Burnet, another Hill Country hamlet, takes the 10th spot.
