Rangers' stadium tops list as most vegan-friendly ballpark in the U.S.
Of all the ballparks across the country, the Texas Rangers' Globe Life Park has won the prize for being most vegan-friendly of all. The Arlington ballpark scored the No. 1 spot on PETA's 2017 list of Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Ballparks.
This is the stadium's first appearance on the list in nine years, and a definite factor was its all-vegan food cart, offering treats such as nachos topped with dairy-free cheese, chili with Beyond Beef Feisty Crumble, black bean tamales, burgers, and franks.
PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman uses baseball puns in her kind words for the stadium. Puns are always welcome.
"Globe Life Park has gone to bat for animals and compassionate baseball fans alike," she says in a release. "PETA is delivering top honors to the Texas Rangers' home field for knocking it out of the park with creative animal-friendly twists on classic stadium food."
PETA notes that going vegan would afford baseball players and their fans the time to enjoy more ballgames, since eating meat and other animal-derived foods has been conclusively linked to a higher risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Every vegan saves more than 100 animals a year in today's industrialized meat, egg, and dairy industries.
The ballpark added the vegan cart in 2016, stationed near the third-base line in Section 16, and it's been a big success.
Delaware North, the ballpark's concessionaire, worked with Veggie Texas Ranger Fans, a Facebook page advocating for more vegan offerings set up by Twalla Grant, a Rangers fan who follows a plant-based diet.
The concessions team even went to the trouble of procuring special vegan buns from Whole Foods Market.
The stadium also offers other vegan items in its regular concession areas, including a vegan hot dog, fruit, salad, sunflower seeds, peanuts, pistachios, French fry cup, Cajun fries, sweet potato fries, side winder fries, and pretzels.
The new cart not only serves as a convenient one-stop destination, it scores the ballpark a treasured national award, beating out the nine other ballparks in vegan-friendly towns like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis, whose Target Field came in at No. 2 for its Herbivorous Butcher with vegan dogs, burgers, burritos, and tacos.
Globe Life Park will receive a framed certificate from PETA.
