Cookie shop touted by Oprah Winfrey to open new bakery in Southlake
A favorite bakery of Oprah Winfrey is coming to Southlake. Cookie Society, which catapulted to fame after earning a spot on Winfrey's annual gift list, is opening a shop at 1161 E. Southlake Blvd. #208.
They're taking over the old Gigi's Cupcakes space and plan to open in March.
Cookie Society was founded by retired NFL player Jeff Allen and his wife Marissa, who are thrilled to nab the ready-made second generation bakery space.
“When you think of a second gen space, you think ‘Why didn’t the previous concept or tenant survive?’” Jeff says. “But we’re looking at it as an opportunity to enter a new market, and we think the opportunity makes sense. We’ll take the chance.”
The couple founded Cookie Society in Frisco in 2020, a month after COVID-19 arrived. Things might have gone differently if not for Winfrey, who featured their signature cookie Gift Crate on her annual holiday gift list in the December 2020 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.
“Oprah definitely gave us a huge boost, an opportunity to be seen on a national scale,” Jeff says. “It got a lot of people in the doors, and we’ve been able to stay consistent with a quality product and retain those customers.”
They went on to open a second location in Addison in 2021. Southlake is their first in Tarrant County, and will serve their many customers from cities like Argyle, Keller, Grapevine, Arlington, and Fort Worth.
Their cookies are larger than the usual cookie and are made with butter, giving them a crisp exterior with a tender middle and chewy texture.
They do a rotating menu, offering 10 varieties every month, ranging from classics like chocolate chip to seasonal flavors like king cake, frosted oatmeal, banana pudding, strawberries & cream, and a plant-based chocolate chip. You can order them in a 6-pack for $28 or a 12-pack for $52.
Marissa manages most of the kitchen, day-to-day operations, and recipe development; Jeff focuses on finances and marketing.
“We always say we’re a big business in a small building, but we’re really a small business still,” Jeff says. “We still wear a lot of hats. Any time we open a store, it’s all hands on deck.”
