Fort Worth cooking school Indulge FW closes with promise to return
A resource for Fort Worth foodies has closed: Indulge FW, a school and tea room that offered cooking classes for all levels of home cooks, is closing for now, but with a hope to return in a new location.
The closure is the final domino in the aftermath of the closure of 3rd St. Market, the market-restaurant at 425 W. 3rd St. where Indulge FW was based.
Indulge founder Dixya Bhattarai was able to continue offering classes when the space was taken over by a new tenant: The Patissery, an erratic bakery business.
But unfortunately, The Patissery shut down in mid-April after only two months, with no notice.
Bhattarai says she is shopping for a new place to call home.
"I'd like to find a standalone space like an event planner or winery," she says. "I'm brainstorming right now and have a couple meetings lined up - we'll see where that takes us."
Bhattarai, who is a dietician and former co-owner of The Table (a grocery in Near Southside) and Hao & Dixya dumplings, has been teaching cooking classes since 2017. When 3rd St. Market opened, she made it the headquarters for Indulge FW, offering classes, afternoon tea, and group events.
In February, 3rd St. Market founders Trent Shaskan and Dena Peterson Shaskan closed to focus on other ventures such as Wines From A Broad, the wine shop Dena opened in 2023. The Patissery, which was founded in 2023 as a wholesale supplier of baked goods to other shops such as Bodega South on Main, stepped in, but with unpredictable hours and a nonresponsive social media presence. But Bhattarai was still able to host classes in the space.
However, The Patissery's sudden closure left her scrambling to cancel classes and issue refunds. (Her final event was a Mother's Day tea she moved to Tokyo Cafe, thanks to the generosity of owner Kevin Martinez.)
Bhattarai remains passionate about the idea of sharing food, community, and building kitchen confidence, with classes for all level of cooks, and a roster of instructors from different backgrounds teaching everything from Peruvian lomo saltado to seafood paella to shokupan, AKA Japanese milk bread.
"There's nothing like sharing a love for cooking and conversations around the table," she says.
As for the 3rd St. Market space, a spokesperson from Sundance Square says via email that, "rather than expanding into a retail restaurant, the Patissery decided to return to their 'wholesale' structure of French pastry distribution in North Texas. Further tenant plans for the Third Street Market space in Sundance Square are already underway."
The Patissery is providing croissants to Bodega on Main, as well as La La Land, a coffee shop in Plano. But what is this post on their Instagram page, indicating that they're opening a shop at the Shops at Willow Bend mall in Plano?
"Is your Fort Worth location permanently closed?" asks one commenter. No response.
