Florida's acclaimed Kahwa Coffee opens first Texas shop in Fort Worth
A respected coffee concept from Florida has made its Texas debut: Kahwa Coffee, a coffee roaster and retail chain, opened its first location in Texas in Fort Worth, at 1050 W. Magnolia Ave., on the ground floor of the Highline on Magnolia, a new four-story apartment building, where it's serving coffee and espresso drinks, plus breakfast sandwiches, muffins, and pastries.
Kahwa was founded in St. Petersburg in 2006 by Sarah and Raphael Perrier, and rose to fame when it received a celebrity endorsement from French chef Paul Bocuse, who selected Kahwa coffee for his restaurant in Epcot, Chefs de France. Kahwa has since become the largest independent coffee roaster in Florida, and has also opened 14 locations across the Sunshine State.
The Fort Worth location is a franchise and family business from Josh and Kelli Savering, their daughter Maddison, and son-in-law Ryan Stahler. The family came across the brand while traveling to Florida.
"When we go somewhere, we love to visit local shops," Josh says. "We found Kahwa and fell in love with the product."
The cold brew is a bestseller, but they do notable flavor twists such as their Almond Cold Brew topped with raspberry cold foam. Unusual lattes include the Aloha Latte with espresso, steamed milk, plus coconut and macadamia syrup. They also offer distinctive non-coffee beverages such as the Desert Rose Spritz, a lemonade with prickly pear, San Pellegrino Essenza Lemon, and lemon zest.
The shop serves breakfast sandwiches all day, on bagels or croissants. Arlington-basaed Sweet Bee Bakery provides their muffins, croissants, breads madeleines, muffins and scones.
“We spent quite some time looking for the right partners, as we wanted to support local business," Kelli says.
Having the shop in town makes it easier for fans to get Kahwa's acclaimed roasted coffee beans for those brewing drinks at home.
Choosing Magnolia as their first location was easy, Kelli says.
“We love the Magnolia area — we come and eat here all the time," she says. "When we found this new apartment building and they had retail space, we were thrilled."
The space is cheerful, with glossy white subway tile and a company color scheme of mustard-yellow-gold and turquoise. Seating in front lets customers sip their coffee and watch the flow of Magnolia pass by.
However, it will not be their only location: There's a second already in construction in Justin, on FM Road 156, which will open in the fall — a recreation of the original in Fort Worth but with a little extra: a drive thru option.
