Panther City BBQ takes over familiar restaurant spot in FW Stockyards

More Panther City BBQ for everyone in Fort Worth.
Fort Worth's Michelin-recognized barbecue favorite Panther City BBQ is expanding to the Stockyards, taking over the longtime home of La Playa Maya on North Main Street.
The restaurant will open a second Fort Worth location at 1540 N. Main St., a 6,463-square-foot restaurant in the Historic Northside. The space most recently housed La Playa Maya, which closed its longtime Stockyards location on July 5 after more than three decades in the area.
After a tease on social media, the news was made official in an August 26 press release issued by LanCarte Commercial, which facilitated the lease. Sarah LanCarte and Brittany Doyle represented the landlord in the transaction.
“The existing restaurant infrastructure and location make 1540 N. Main Street a natural fit for Panther City BBQ’s expansion,” Doyle said in a statement. “It’s exciting to see a local operator continue to grow and take on a space with such a long history in the area.”

Panther City BBQ was founded by Christian Magallanes and Ernest Morales, who started the business as a catering operation in 2014 before launching a food truck and eventually opening the permanent restaurant at 201 E. Hattie St. in 2019.
The barbecue spot is known for its smoked meats and Texas barbecue with Tex-Mex touches, including BBQ Twists such as pork belly poppers and brisket elote, along with double brisket smashburgers. They also have a late-night taco operation called La Pantera Tacos Y Mas.
The restaurant earned international recognition in 2024 when it was named a “Recommended” restaurant in the inaugural Michelin Guide Texas (a distinction it retained in the 2025 edition). It also won Best Barbecue in the 2025 CultureMap Fort Worth Tastemaker Awards.
Panther City's owners acquired the historic Bailey's Bar-B-Que restaurant in downtown Fort Worth in 2024, transforming it into Fort Worth Barbecue Co. Until recently, Panther City BBQ had also been the official caterer for the Woman's Club of Fort Worth.
The new location puts Panther City BBQ in the middle of the Stockyards action, within walking distance of the district's restaurants, bars, live music venues, and hotels. The existing restaurant build-out and kitchen will allow the barbecue restaurant to move into the space without starting from scratch, LanCarte reps note.
La Playa Maya had occupied the two-story building for decades, becoming a familiar stop for Mexican seafood, ceviche, margaritas, and other Mexican fare before outings at Billy Bob's Texas and other Stockyards venues. La Playa Maya's other locations in Fort Worth and Hudson Oaks remain open.
Panther City BBQ has not yet announced an opening date for its Stockyards location, but the owners told FWTX Magazine it won't be until at least this winter.
