A three-in-one restaurant, butcher shop, and market has opened in north Fort Worth: Called Spice and Slice Halal Market, it’s serving Indian and Nepali cuisine at 7451 N. Beach St #172, in the Basswood Crossing shopping center.
It softly opened on February 14.
Spice and Slice comes from three business partners: Anish Timsina, Anup Siwatoki, and Sagar Dhungel, who are expanding into the restaurant world following shared experience in the convenience store sector. They share duties on operations and front of house.
They wanted to create a space that’s a one-stop shop for a hot meal, cuts of lamb, goat, or chicken from the halal butcher counter, groceries, and maybe something sweet like a slice of cake.
Nepalese and Indian food is known for its spiciness and heat from peppers and Himalayan spices, and Spice and Slice is no different.
“A lot of people from Indian and Nepalese regions moved here in the past year,” Siwatoki says. “I always felt like there was something missing food wise, such as options for halal meat.”
Their restaurant menu features more than 50 items including samosas, biryani, tandoori chicken, and the growingly popular momo, a Nepalese dumpling, either fried or steamed, with an optional chili topping.
Vegetarian food is popular in Indian cuisine and they offer vegetable dishes such as saag paneer, with spinach and cottage cheese cubes in a cream sauce, and gobi manchurian, featuring cauliflower in a sweet and spicy sauce.
Other notable options include:
- Mutton sekuwa with marinated lamb grilled in a clay oven
- Grilled chicken tikka tacos
- Chicken lovstick with marinated and tossed chicken baked in a clay pot
They have their shop sectioned off into a market with metal shelves stocked with rice, noodles, snacks, spices such as turmeric and pepper, sauces, and black bins filled with fresh fruits and vegetables.
There's also a refrigerated section featuring frozen vegetables, naan, dumplings, and sweets like the Bengali sweet milk dumpling rasmalai and ladoo, an Indian sugary ball dessert.
Menu prices are affordable and are all under $20.
Spice and Slice also offers seating for indoor dining with black tables and chairs sectioned off from the market area of the shop.
"It took us one year to put this together before we could finally open, and had friends and family to try it first," Siwatoki says. "There was a real necessity in this area for our market."
