The first weekend of June brings a nice array of events in and around the Fort Worth area. Among the happenings are the beginning of a fun concert series, a play, cliff diving, a fundraiser run, and one of the biggest concerts of the summer.

Thursday, June 2
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Concerts in the Garden
The annual Concerts in the Garden series at Fort Worth Botanic Garden starts this weekend, with three options. First is Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Friday, followed by Beatles tribute band Classical Mystery Tour on Saturday, and lastly Gershwin in the Garden by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra on Sunday.
Amphibian Stage Productions presents Emily Maya Mills
Comedian Emily Maya Mills has been a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles since 2006. She's appeared on Parks and Recreation, Conan, and Key and Peele, and she's just coming off God Hates Figs, her critically acclaimed one-woman show. She's performing on both Thursday and Friday at Amphibian Stage Productions.
Friday, June 3
Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series
You can get some thrills this weekend by heading out to Possum Kingdom Lake for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. The international event makes its first stop of 2016 in Texas, returning to the infamous Hell’s Gate Cliffs for the third consecutive year of gravity-defying action. Both men and women are competing, which means the return of Texas resident and two-time defending women’s division champion Rachelle “Rocco” Simpson.
First Fridays at the Modern
On the first Friday of each month this summer, the Star-Telegram, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Café Modern are teaming up to present live music and cocktails in the Museum's Grand Lobby. Kicking things off is the Tom Reynolds Trio, complemented by the special cocktail of the month, Summer Breeze.
Magnolia at the Modern presents Dark Horse
Also at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is Dark Horse, an inspirational true story about a barmaid in a poor Welsh mining village who convinces some of her fellow residents to pool their resources to compete in the "Sport of Kings," with a racehorse they will breed and raise themselves. The film screens six times over three days through Sunday.
Saturday, June 4
2016 Joe's Run
Jimmy Buffett was in town last weekend, but his spirit sticks around with the annual Joe's Run, a race where runners are encouraged to wear tropical shirts and leis to run or walk in the 10K or 5K. Following the race is an island-themed party, complete with beach party music and island treats. The event raises funds for Samaritan House, a nonprofit social service agency with a focus on providing housing and life-changing opportunities for homeless individuals and families affected by HIV and other special needs.
Amon Carter Museum of American Art presents Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis
The newest exhibit at Amon Carter Museum of American Art is the first comprehensive museum exhibition on Norman Lewis, and it explores his influential role in American art from the 1930s through the 1970s. Lewis was a pivotal figure in the Harlem art community and the abstract expressionist movement, as well as a politically conscious activist who was able to reflect the currents of the civil rights movement in his abstract work. The exhibition is through August 21.
National Theatre Live presents Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is the latest in the National Theatre Live series, presented by Amphibian Stage Productions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. It's the classic story about former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, competing in games of seduction and revenge. Starring Elaine Cassidy, Janet McTeer, and Dominic West, the award-winning London play from earlier this year is being screened three times — once Saturday and twice more on June 8.
Kenny Chesney in concert with Miranda Lambert, Jake Owen, and Old Dominion
The first big concert of the summer is this monster at AT&T Stadium, featuring country superstar Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Jake Owen, and Old Dominion. Chesney is touring in support of his forthcoming 2016 album, Some Town Somewhere, while Lambert is still riding high off the success of her 2014 album, Platinum.
