These are the 9 best things to do in Fort Worth this weekend

It's another festive weekend of holiday-themed events in and around Fort Worth, but there are a few interesting non-holiday choices. You can see a great classical pianist, watch two new holiday theater productions, laugh at a one-man show about a superhero, see the definitive local version of a holiday classic, and more.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. Want more options? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

Thursday, December 6

Cliburn in the Community: Rachel Cheung

Daystar Television Network presents Daystar Christmas
There’s always something new to discover at Daystar Christmas, the annual holiday lights display at Daystar Television Network in Bedford. With a life-sized nativity, over 1 million Christmas lights, a kid-friendly Christmas town, and more, this display is fun for the whole family. The event will be open daily through December 21.

Stage West Theatre presents Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol
Condemned to a shackled eternity, Jacob Marley’s spirit is given one chance to change his fate and escape his eternal chains — by returning to the world he scorned one Christmas Eve night to redeem his old business partner, Scrooge. Scrooge’s heart is indeed opened, but not before Marley discovers his own in this delightful twist on the iconic Dickens classic. The production will run at Stage West Theatre through December 23.

Casa Mañana presents Santaland Diaries
Santaland Diaries is a sardonic, irreverent holiday tale of Crumpet, the grumpiest elf at Macy’s in New York at Christmastime. What began as a way for an out-of-work writer to pay the bills quickly becomes an absurd and hilarious quest through the trials and tribulations of a middle-aged elf dealing with cynical Santas, greedy children, and their harried parents. The production, suitable for mature audiences, will run at Casa Mañana Theatre through December 22.

Amphibian Stage Productions presents The Dork Knight
A look into one man's obsession with movies about another man's obsession with dressing up like a rodent and punching people, The Dork Knight traces the ups and downs of actor Jason O'Connell's personal and professional life as seen through the prism of his love/hate relationship with the Batman movies. The production, running through December 16 at Amphibian Stage Productions, strolls down a cinematic memory lane that begins with Tim Burton's iconic 1989 Batman, and extends beyond Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.

Friday, December 7

Magnolia at the Modern Film presents What They Had
From first-time writer/director Elizabeth Chomko, What They Had centers on a family in crisis. Bridget (Hilary Swank) returns home to Chicago at her brother's (Michael Shannon) urging to deal with her mother's (Blythe Danner) Alzheimer's disease and her father's (Robert Forster) reluctance to let go of their life together. The film will screen six times through Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

Ballet Concerto presents "A Holiday Special"
A Holiday Special begins with Winter Wonderland, set to familiar Christmas tunes, followed by Memories of Frosty, based on the well-known story Frosty the Snowman, as the featured ballet. Also on the program is a Hanukkah Flamenco, which introduces the audience to the story of Hanukkah. The program closes with O Holy Night, a re-enactment of the nativity in dance. The performance will take place at Will Rogers Memorial Center.

Texas Ballet Theater presents The Nutcracker
Texas Ballet Theater's production of The Nutcracker is the definitive one in Dallas-Fort Worth. A magical Christmas Eve comes to life in the ballet that features Clara and her Nutcracker Prince battling an army of mice led by the evil Rat King, and traveling through a winter wonderland to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Kingdom of Sweets. The production runs through December 24 at Bass Performance Hall.

Saturday, December 8

Circle Theatre presents Holiday Punch
Circle Theatre will present a holiday celebration show with an inspired twist. The audience will spark the scripts and performances based on their personal stories, ideas, or wishes. The audience will have the opportunity to commission a personally assigned playwright to interpret one of their favorite holiday memories as an artfully imagined two-to-three-minute monologue. The fundraiser will feature multiple prize drawings, hors d’oeuvres, wine, craft beer on tap, and musical entertainment.
