Longtime Fort Worth taqueria heads west in new hot chicken partnership
A longtime Fort Worth taqueria is setting up shop at a new location in an exciting new partnership that brings together tacos and chicken: Acapulco Taqueria, an authentic taqueria that had been open on North Main Street for more than 30 years, is headed west to Willow Park, where it will open at 337 Shops Blvd. #103, inside the Shops at Willow Park.
According to co-owner Javier Tafoya, the new location will open on Monday, February 20.
Acapulco Taqueria was previously at 1515 N. Main St., across the street from the Fort Worth Mercado building, where it was founded by Catalina Bueros in 1989.
Bueros passed the restaurant down to her son Jorge Tafoya, and it's now being operated by third-generation brothers Javier and Ivan Tafoya. It remained in operation until 2022, when it was closed in order to redevelop the property.
Javier says they're thrilled to bring their grandmother's recipes to a new audience.
"We have been looking to expand our brand outside of Fort Worth and believe this is the perfect location," he says.
Acapulco Taqueria is known for traditional Mexican tacos, Acapulco-style shrimp cocktail, and specialty margaritas. That includes breakfast tacos with egg combos like egg, chorizo, & cheese.
Their menu includes quesadillas with cheese or meat, in choices from asada, al pastor, or chicken; tortas & burritos; sopes, flautas, & gorditas; menudo; plus seafood specials like fried tilapia with French fries.
They rotate in taco specials like shredded beef brisket, beef tongue, and chicharron, as well as special salsas such as a pineapple hot sauce. They also have a mobile outlet which they've been setting up in the West 7th area since 2020.
The new location is not simply a move: It'll share space with Hot Chicks Chicken, the fast-casual restaurant from One Entertainment (Landmark Bar & Kitchen, Texas Republic, The Yard, Playground in Fort Worth; Theory Nightclub, Cutie Pies Pizza, Playground Bar in Uptown Dallas) that does Nasvhille style hot chicken and boozy slushies.
Hot Chicks debuted in DFW in 2020, initially as a pop-up concept before opening its first location in Plano, followed by the Willow Park location which it opened in July 2021. (A location near SMU also opened in Dallas in 2022.)
This represents a new partnership between Hot Chicks Chicken and Acapulco Taqueria, who will share the space and serve both menus inside the space.
The new location has been remodeled to showcase both brands. They've added TVs for sports viewing, and will have a brisk happy hour with discounted food and drinks.
“After visiting this Hot Chicks location weekly to get my Nashville hot chicken rice bowl fix, I started thinking what a great location this would be for our taqueria and reached out to the Hot Chicks team," Javier says. "Several discussions later, we decided to roll out a store model with dual brands."
Their ultimate goal: to open more dual-branded locations combining Hot Chicks Chicken and Acapulco Taqueria.
The first week at Willow Park will be a soft opening, and they'll offer free margaritas with every taco plate purchase from Monday-Friday. The first 10 customers on Saturday February 25 also get free tacos for a year.
