Family-owned Coco Shrimp brings fresh Hawaiian plate lunches to Keller
A popular restaurant specializing in Hawaiian-style fried shrimp has come to Keller. Called Coco Shrimp, it's a small, local chain that opened a location in a small, buzzy center at 1301 Keller Pkwy. #500.
Coco Shrimp was founded in 2016 as a food truck by Isaac and Lauren Hadley, who were enchanted by the Hawaiian and island flavors from shrimp trucks they’d encountered during their years attending Brigham Young University in Hawaii along the North Shore.
They took that as inspiration, first with a food truck — a former ambulance they painted in vivid, island-style colors. They opened their first brick-and-mortar location in 2019 in Fort Worth at 318 Bryan Ave., followed by a second Fort Worth location at 2401 Heritage Trace Pkwy. Helping them in their expansion are Isaac's sister and her husband, Mary and Jordan Barrus.
Known for their tacos and shrimp plates, featuring shrimp, rice, and salad, they've grown a following — as well as accolades such as a nomination for CultureMap's Tastemaker Awards Restaurant of the Year in 2022.
Hawaiin plate lunches generally feature pork but Coco Shrimp does a novel spin by featuring shrimp. Their menu offers shrimp in five flavors: Coco Shrimp (coconut), sweet & spicy, lemon herb, butter garlic, and spicy. Popular dishes include:
- Sampler plate with seven shrimp served over buttered rice, with salad, for $13
- Butter garlic shrimp, with sautéed shrimp tossed in butter garlic sauce, with buttered rice and salad, $11.50
- Double coco tacos feature coconut shrimp, rice, Romaine, and cilantro-lime dressing in a flour tortilla, $9.95
There's also a cool dessert called Bubbles Mochi, a ball of ice cream covered in a chewy dough.
Their reach extends across the DFW area, with seven locations total inclluding Fort Worth, Watauga, Denton, Plano, and Richardson. And yet they've kept a personal touch.
The Keller location carries on the tradition of making customers feel like family, according to Keller restaurant manager Olivia Solis.
"We treat the people like family, and our plates are amazing," Solis says. "We have a lot of flavors and choices to enjoy, and we are so friendly here.”
