Ambitious Italian restaurant Little Dutch makes big debut in Grapevine

Pasta at Little Dutch in Grapevine.
A new Italian restaurant from a savvy DFW veteran has debuted in Grapevine: Called Little Dutch, it's an upscale spot with steak, pastas, and a full bar, newly open at 1285 S. Main St., in a space that was previously home to a location of the now-closed Fireside Pies chain.
Little Dutch is from Noti Krasniqi, a name that will be familiar to Italian food aficionados, since he's been involved in the DFW Italian food scene for more than a decade.
In 2014, he opened his own concept, Mio Nonna Trattoria in Allen, then opened a second location in Flower Mound in 2017. A native of Kosovo (formerly Yugoslavia), he owned a restaurant in the Hamptons called Andrra prior to moving to the DFW area.
He describes Little Dutch as his next-level, more ambitious concept, and it certainly occupies a larger, more gloriously-appointed space. The restaurant has been in the works for more than a year, and the build-out is impressive, featuring multiple chandeliers, beautiful ceramic tile, a terrazzo floor lobby, and a built-in glass atrium patio with a classic black-and-white checkerboard tile floor.
Among the "no expenses spared" acquisitions is a high-end Josper combination indoor charcoal oven and grill to roast meats and other entrees. According to lore, when something is "cooked in the Josper" or "Josper-grilled," it means the food has been seared at high heat inside an enclosed chamber, which creates a juicy center and a discernible smoky crust.

The menu features some of the dishes found at Mio Nonna, but tilts more high-end with Wagyu beef skewers and steaks from famed purveyor Allen Brothers such as New York strip and filet mignon.
Highlights:
- Starters include calamari, oysters, steak tartare, focaccia, meatballs, wedge salad, and Caesar salad.
- Entrees include branzino, veal Milanese, lamb lollipops, and a roasted half chicken.
- There's a burger served with fries cooked in trendy beef tallow, and a gourmet focaccia sandwich with deli meats and pistachio pesto.
- Pastas include pasta Bolognese, rigatoni a la vodka which can be ordered vegetarian, cacio e pepe, and short rib capelletti with a lemon ricotta filling.
Desserts include cheesecake and tiramisu. A full bar includes cocktails such as a negroni, frozen peach bellini, and a Mata Hari with brandy, pomegranate, and chai vermouth, priced from $16 to $19, as well as an extensive wine list with labels from the West Coast, France, Italy, and Spain.
According to the city of Grapevine, the restaurant's name is a tribute to Krasniqi's childhood nickname, which was "Reagan" — for President Ronald Reagan. Reagan's nickname was "Dutch," and the name represents Krasniqi's journey to the American dream.
