Sweet Grapevine restaurant Mason & Dixie to close after 7 years
A charming, indepently-owned restaurant in Grapevine is closing: Mason & Dixie, which served Southern food at 603 S. Main St., will mark its final day on December 26, after seven years.
Chef-owner Beth Newman posted the sad news, stating that she was closing "with profound regret and a heavy heart."
What began as a six-table restaurant in an antique market became a destination for scratch food, hosting lunch from 11 am-4 pm with dishes like croque monsieur, chicken salad and egg salad sandwiches, baked potato soup, and tomato-basil bisque — all the while earning nods for dishes such as her pimento cheese sandwich served on bread by Dallas' acclaimed Empire Baking Co.
The restaurant was an enthusiastic supporter of the neighborhood, frequently staying open at night for special Main Street celebrations, and was also a favorite destination for birthday celebrations, marriage proposals, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, wedding receptions, and more.
Newman, who invested lots of her own money and TLC into the space, offered a detailed account of how the closure came to be, including the arrival of a new landlord who planned on raising the rent and who required that she vacate at the end of the year.
Newman said she found a buyer who could pay the rent and keep the business afloat so that her employees could keep their jobs, but the landlord had other plans.
In upbeat news, residents and reps from nearby cities such as Roanoke and Keller all urged her to consider re-opening in another location.
Meanwhile, she's offering everything in the space for sale, to be picked up by December 30.
"I am overwhelmed by the prospect of what to do with all the items," she said. "Take a piece of Mason & Dixie home forever and please forgive the tear stains."
