Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. has released two seasonal beers, both annual brews that have won international awards: Snowmageddon, an Imperial oatmeal stout, and Iron Thistle, which is the Fort Worth brewery’s strong Scotch-style ale.
Snowmageddon occupies a special place as an annual tribute acknowledging the support the brewery received during its rebuilding process after snow and ice collapsed part of the roof in 2010. It’s a rich, bold beer with semi-sweet chocolate flavors, a creamy body, and semi-dry finish.
Iron Thistle was Rahr’s first National Grand Champion at the United States Beer Tasting Championship in 2009. It has a bold taste dominated by a smooth, sweet maltiness and caramel flavors.
Both are available by retail in stores and on tap. Rahr & Sons will also release a limited amount of Snowmageddon aged in bourbon barrels in March.
