Fort Worth vegan caterer races to become Carla Hall's Favorite Chef
A Fort Worth chef and caterer is vying for a shot at national fame and glory: Asianae Dews, a vegan chef who specializes in plant-based foods, is competing on Favorite Chef, a global cooking competition hosted by celebrity chef Carla Hall.
The annual competition cultivates a community of chefs supporting chefs, as well as bolstering programs that promote inclusivity and sustainability. The winner gets $25,000, appears on the cover of Taste of Home magazine, and participates in a cooking session with Hall.
The current voting round has 15 contestants and Dews is at No. 3.
Dews runs Hol Foods, a catering company that specializes in meatless meals ranging from brunch to dinner.
"I prepare exclusively plant-based cuisine, doing versions of the meals we know and love, that are just as flavorful as we remember," she says.
Her menu includes vegan renditions of pancakes, pastas, sesame ginger lo mein, nachos, and burgers, and can be ordered through the Hol Foods Facebook page or email.
Originally from Denver, Colorado, Dews moved to Fort Worth more than a decade ago for education in anesthesiology, before redirecting her goals to be "the best stay at home mom." She soon found cooking opportunities in the vegan realm.
On her Facebook page, she offers the occasional cooking technique, as well as photos of creations such as her recent hot cacao cake.
"I pride myself on baking plant-based because I once believed it was impossible to bake without eggs," she says.
“Fort Worth is on the cutting edge of vegan cuisine," she says. “The emerging establishments dedicated to vegans open a door for art-scientists like myself to serve our community."
Meanwhile, the next voting round, which will narrow down the selection from 15 to 10 contestants, ends on July 13. Fans can vote every day; Dews' page is here. The competition is currently open-voting; as the rounds progress to the last few cooks, the voting will be up to Hall.
The competition ends July 15 and a winner will be announced in August.
