August is a time for harvesting wine grapes, and one local winery celebrate with a grape stomp party. This week also brings some tasty educational opportunities, including a bloody Mary making class, a brisket smoking class, and a sugar cookie decorating class. Kick things off with a beach-themed girls night at a rooftop bar and restaurant.

Thursday, August 1

Pop-Up Beach Party at Atico
Tim Love's rooftop restaurant and bar at the Springhill Suites in the Fort Worth Stockyards will host a beach-themed gal pal party coinciding with National Girlfriend Day. In addition to boutique vendors selling boots, clothes, flowers, and salon services, the restaurant will offer a prix-fixe menu special that includes three courses and a glass of wine or Codigo Rose margarita for $80. Menu choices range from steak and oysters to short rib and churros. The party starts at 6 pm.

Friday, August 2

Happy Hour at The Kimbell
Friday means it’s time for an after-hours happy hour at the Kimbell Café inside the Kimbell Art Museum’s Kahn Building. Enjoy live music by the Allegro Guitar Society along with beverages and bites available for purchase. (Members receive 10 percent off.) Admission is free.

Brisket U at Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.
Barbecue season is still in full swing and even the most greenhorn pitmaster can learn how to smoke brisket like the pros during this educational class at Rahr & Sons Brewing Company. Everything from selecting the cut and managing the fire to trimming the final product will be covered. Tickets are $139 ($129 for additional participants) and class will run from 10 am-1 pm.

Pick Your Poison: Bloody Mary at Restaurant 506
Learn how to make the perfect bloody Mary during this cocktail class led by bartenders from Arlington’s Restaurant 506 at The Sanford House. The brunch-time class is $35 and will run from 11 am-12 pm. Light bites included.

17th Annual Harvest Fiesta & Grape Stomp at Lost Oak Winery
The Burleson winery will host an old fashioned, family-friendly grape stomp giving guests the opportunity to crush grapes with their bare feet in I Love Lucy fashion. (Dress like Lucy for a chance to win prizes in a costume contest.) There’ll be live music with a full band, food trucks including Hibachigo and Nona’s Argentina Bakery, and vendors. Admission to the event is free, but tickets to stomp are $25 and come with a commemorative bag. The event will run from 6-9 pm with stomp timeslots available every half-hour until 8 pm.

Poolside Cookie Decorating Class at Waterside
This hands-on sugar cookie decorating class hosted by Aly’s Sweet Spot will take place in the community room at the Waterside development. While the class is not actually "poolside," cookie creations will feature a poolside theme – innertubes, flamingos, pool hats, and towels. Tickets are $65 and class will run from 12:30-2:30 pm.

TikTok critic Keith Lee visits Dallas spinoff of Fort Worth steakhouse

A TikTok critic paid a visit to a surprisingly fancy DFW restaurant: Viral critic Keith Lee, whose online restaurant critiques generate millions of views, bestowed a visit upon Wicked Butcher, a local steakhouse that started in Fort Worth.

Wicked Butcher is a fine-dining spot from hospitality group DRG Concepts that debuted in Fort Worth’s Sinclair Hotel in 2020 with a menu of steaks, seafood, and wine. Lee visited the Dallas location, which was originally known as Dallas ChopHouse, then reopened as a Wicked Butcher spinoff in early 2024.

According to a spokesperson for the restaurant, Lee visited on December 29, and gave no warning he was coming. He wasn't invited or compensated for the review; he just showed up as a guest and ordered food to go.

But he seems to have been recognized, since a general manager approached him and asked for his feedback on the food. The spokesperson, however, states that they ask for feedback from all their guests regardless of status.

A steakhouse is a little more highbrow than some of the small, independent spots Lee has favored in the past. In a four-minute TikTok video, he shares what he ordered, along with his ratings and comments.

Items he ordered along with his notes include:

Green Curry Salmon. "It's seasoned really well, it's not super spicy, but it does have a little kick," Lee says. "The rice has the perfect texture, too." 8.6 out of 10.
Steak Frites. He gave the fries and steak separate ratings. He liked the parmesan cheese on the fries, but wished they were more salted. The steak was medium rare. Said it was “very well-seasoned and extremely tender” and that it was “cooked perfectly.” Fries 7.5 out of 10; steak 8 out of 10.
Salmon tartare and rice crackers. Commented that the cracker is "seasoned perfectly, in my opinion," with a chili lime seasoning. 9 out of 10
Bread was described as “pillowy, layered, and flaky.” 7.5 out of 10.
Blackberry basil lemonade. He enjoyed it so much that he ordered two. “Another blackberry mint lemonade, please!” 9 out of 10.

He gave customer service a rating of 9 out of 10, remarking that customer service in downtown Dallas is usually good.

The total bill was $142.89.

“One thing I do love about the Dallas food scene— we’ve been here about a month, a month and a half— they do got some nice fine dining restaurants,” Lee says in the video.

Lee recently relocated to Texas from Las Vegas in November, after visiting Dallas on a number of house-hunting trips as well as roundups of Dallas-area restaurants. Wicked Butcher is not the only DFW-area restaurant he's explored; he recently visited Hutchins BBQ.
