Chicken fried steak at K&K Cafe.
The May edition of Where to Eat in Fort Worth, CultureMap's monthly column of hot restaurant picks, has a slight healthy vibe, with two out of five restaurants falling into the healthy restaurant category. There's also a steakhouse, a chef restaurant riding a hot trend, and an amazing new home-cooking place with fabulous baked goods.
Here's where to eat in Fort Worth for May:
K&K Cafe
Amazing home-cooking place (and a Trey's Chowdown discovery) in White Settlement at 7628 Corina Dr., behind Silver Wheel Skating Rink, is open for breakfast and lunch, serving classics like chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, and pot roast. They even do stuffed peppers, a rarity. Breakfast includes pancakes, chicken & waffles, breakfast tacos, and a stupendous smothered biscuit with sausage gravy, bacon, and eggs. They make everything themselves and toss in gourmet touches like arugula on a sandwich, gorgeous golden skin-on fries, and avocado toast. They also have a serious baking program with massive cinnamon rolls, plus cakes, cheesecake, and pies.
Meraki
As always, chef Tim Love is top of the latest hottest trend. This time it's Mediterranean, with his latest restaurant spotlighting dishes from Greece and other Mediterranean regions, now open at Courtside Kitchen, the pickleball facility in the former Mopac Event Center at University Drive and I-30. The menu has lamb, seafood, and short ribs, but the menu is dominated by sides, starters, and shareable dishes such as gigante beans with tomato, falafel with tahini, black garlic hummus, and eggplant with roasted peppers & Texas pecans.
Original ChopShop
Healthy chain founded in Scottsdale, Arizona is a fan of DFW, having opened 10 locations in the area, including this latest in the Medical District at 105 E. Pennsylvania Ave. which opened in late March; it joins locations at Alliance and Southlake. The menu has sandwiches, protein bowls, shakes, breakfast items, and parfaits, and all of that variety is well and good — but the signature chopped salad is the way to go, thanks to good ingredients and perky dressings, in varieties such as the Italian with house greens, arugula, bacon, pickle, banana pepper, and tomato in Italian vinaigrette.
Theodore's Steak and Seafood
Newly opened restaurant in the former Campo Verde Mexican Bar & Grill (the Dalworthington Gardens restaurant famous for its Christmas lights) is from chef Mouhssine "Moose" Benhamacht and business partner Liesl Best, who also own Cafe Americana in Arlington, now doing the steakhouse they've always wanted. The menu features interactive dishes like the two-pound tomahawk steak and two-pound porterhouse steak, which are carved at the table. Other dishes include seafood risotto, lamb chops, short rib stroganoff, sea bass, and wedge salad. Decor features homages to President Theodore Roosevelt, for whom the restaurant is named.
Toastique
Just-opened restaurant in Willow Park is part of a chain founded in Washington, D.C., which has successfully taken what seemed at first like a trend — toasts — and turn it into an enduring and appealing concept, with toasts of course, but also sandwiches, salads, bowls, smoothies, and coffee drinks. That's thanks to a creative menu as well as a polished execution. Toasts include Avocado Smash, Smoked Salmon, Peanut Butter with bananas, and Fig & Prosciutto with Swiss and Fontina cheese, arugula, Turkish figs, red onion, and pistachio. (You can also get plain toast in varieties such as multigrain, sourdough, and walnut-raisin.) This location is the first in Tarrant County and the fourth in DFW, joining Addison, Flower Mound, and Dallas' West Village.
