Arlington's Wild West Comics moves on up to revitalized center downtown
Arlington's biggest and maybe only comic book and game store is moving to a new location: Wild West Comics will relocate from their Cooper Street location into a newly renovated building at 400 E. Division St.
The store is joining the Urban Union complex, where it will occupy a 2,500 square-foot space featuring bright colors, old-school charm, and modern finishes. They'll open in late September.
Wild West Comics is owned by mother-and-son team Elaine Powell and Matt Powell. They're both Arlington natives, as well as alumni of Arlington High School.
They took over what was originally Lone Star Comics, an Arlington staple founded by Buddy Saunders in 1977 that had served downtown Arlington for nearly 30 years, as well as a location in Fort Worth, in 2013.
Elaine was a longtime employee at Lone Star who served as store manager and general manager. Matthew and her husband, Les, helped to design and construct Lone Star locations.
At the new Arlington store, they plan to expand their tabletop and family game section while adding quirky gifts and collectibles for students, families, and visitors who are touring the revitalized heart of the city.
They're a family of local entrepreneurs: Elaine's other son, Chris Powell, is a founder of 4 Kahunas Tiki Bar, which opened at Urban Union in 2018.
Urban Union recently announced its Phase II featuring boutique shop space, dining, loft apartments, office, and more. Other recent additions include Hurtado Barbecue and The Hive, a sandwich cafe.
