Weekend Event Planner
These are the 11 best things to do in Fort Worth this weekend
The slate of events this weekend in and around Fort Worth will be mostly in-person, with a couple of arts organizations still choosing to go the virtual route. Other choices will include a big golf tournament, comedy from a well-known celebrity, five separate concerts, a huge soccer match, and a movie you won't find at a regular theater.
Below are the best ways to spend your precious free time this weekend.
Thursday, May 27
Charles Schwab Challenge
The Charles Schwab Challenge, the PGA Tour's annual stop in Fort Worth, is usually headlined by top pro golfers like Dallas' own Jordan Spieth or the defending champion (Daniel Berger won in 2020). But this week all eyes will be on Phil Mickelson, who just won the PGA Championship at the ripe old age of 50. Other players in the tournament, running at Colonial Country Club through Sunday and awarding a sweet new prize, will be Sergio Garcia, Lucas Glover, Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, Justin Thomas, and more.
DNAWORKS presents The Real James Bond…Was Dominican
DNAWORKS emerges from the pandemic with the next step towards in-person theater, a live, interactive virtual production of The Real James Bond…Was Dominican at Rochester, New York’s Geva Theatre Center. Christopher Rivas’ innovative production is a true story about Porfirio Rubirosa, Ian Fleming’s primary inspiration for Bond, and a young Dominican actor-to-be whose discovery of “Rubi” shakes his very foundation. The production will have four more livestream performances through Saturday.
Improv Arlington presents Craig Robinson
While Craig Robinson is well known now, he wanted to be a teacher for a long time. It was while he was studying education in Chicago that he also discovered his love of acting and comedy when he joined the famed Second City Theatre. He's arguably best known for his role as acerbic Dunder-Mifflin employee Darryl Philbin on NBC’s Emmy-winning The Office, but he's starred in a number of other movies and TV shows. He'll perform six times through Sunday at Improv Arlington.
Friday, May 28
Magnolia at the Modern: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
From Academy Award winning director Caroline Link (Nowhere in Africa) comes an adaptation of acclaimed British author Judith Kerr's classic novel based on childhood memories of her Jewish family tackling prejudice, exile, displacement, and adaptation after they escaped from 1933 Berlin. The film, which is in German with English subtitles, will have five screenings through Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
Wynonna & The Big Noise in concert
There are few musicians more synonymous with country music than Wynonna Judd. For almost 40 years, Wynonna has been a brand name, either has one half of The Judds with her mom, Naomi, or as a solo artist since the early 1990s. She has released nine full-length albums in her career, and she released the EP Recollections in 2020. She'll play with her band The Big Noise at Arlington Music Hall.
Kody West in concert
Country singer Kody West is one of the latest in a long line of musicians to come out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Hailing originally from Denton, he has gained a loyal following following his debut 2017 album, Green, which led to him serving as the supporting act for artists like Charlie Robison, Whiskey Myers, and Koe Wetzel. He'll play at Billy Bob's Texas in support of his new album, Overgrown.
Saturday, May 29
Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth presents "Sounds of Spring"
The final Virtual Concert of the 2020-2021 Season by the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth will be aired on YouTube Premiere. The concert, which will include Gary Levinson and Swang Lin, violins; Dmitry Kustanovich and Michael Klotz, violas; and Allen Steele, cello, will feature works by Shubert, Tchaikovsky, and Mendelssohn. A special highlight of this program is the Andante Cantabile from Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1, which is being dedicated to the memory the victims of COVID-19.
Thunderstorm Artis in concert
Any fan of NBC's The Voice will already be familiar with Thunderstorm Artis, who was a finalist on Season 18 of the reality singing competition. A singer/songwriter hailing from Hawaii, he comes from a musical family, learning at a very young age how to play piano, guitar, harp, and percussion. He'll play at Downtown Cowtown at the Isis.
MexTour: Mexico vs. Iceland
MexTour, the Mexican National Team’s annual tour of the United States, returns with an opening match against Iceland. Mexico’s game against Iceland will serve as a critical preparation match for the CONCACAF Nations League Finals, which will be played in June. Manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino is expected to bring his top roster to this match at AT&T Stadium.
Aaron Watson in concert
Country singer Aaron Watson is 43 years old and has been recording music for over 20 years. However, it wasn't until 2012 that he hit it big with his 11th album, appropriately titled The Underdog, which went to No. 1 on the country charts, and he's been near the top of the charts ever since. He released his 17th album, American Soul, earlier in 2021. He'll play at Billy Bob's Texas.
Sundance Head in concert
Country singer Sundance Head, who hails from the small town of Porter, Texas, is a veteran of not one but two singing competitions. He made it to the semifinals of season 6 of American Idol in 2007, but bowed out before the live shows. He went on to release two albums before competing on NBC's The Voice in 2016, where he won the whole thing. He'll play at Downtown Cowtown at the Isis in support of his 2019 album, Stained Glass and Neon.
